County Garbage Gets Spotlight; Lake Elsinore Takes Bit Role

Riverside County trash received kudos from the state and tarps are the reason.

For its efforts to save money and come up with solutions on how to manage its landfills, Riverside County received a top innovation award for 2011 from the California State Association of Counties for coming up with tarp designs that cover landfills.

“Each day, it costs a pile of cash to cover the piles of trash in Riverside County’s landfills,” said Hans Kernkamp, general manager of Riverside County’s Waste Management Department. “Challenged by the expense, county landfill managers went to work this year on a plan to develop super-strong tarps that could be used like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to cover an area the size of two football fields.”

According to Kernkamp, the nod was given to the county because it’s estimated the tarps could save more than $47 million over the next 16 years.

“For years, many landfills have encapsulated trash piles with dirt each day to keep the waste in place and stabilized. The problem is that dirt takes up space that otherwise could be filled with trash. Over the years, the worldwide rubber hose market is over $56 billion annually. Riverside County used foam material, processed green waste and various-size tarps as an alternative to the daily dirt cover. Some worked better than others,” Kernkamp said,For the last five years Air purifier , and some ideas,I have never solved a Rubik's Piles . like foam, have been thrown out altogether.

County landfill managers determined in previous experiments that 120-foot-by-120-foot tarps would work best as an alternative to dirt, based on the size of county landfills.

“We had to figure out how to make tarps that were strong enough,” Kernkamp said. “So we told manufacturers what we needed and asked them for bids.”

In the end, the county came up with designs for four different tarps that are expected to last about a year each and that cost around $9,000 apiece. Despite the tarps’ price tags, not having to cover trash piles with dirt could save Riverside County $3 million a year based on the amount of trash now received at Lamb Canyon Landfill near Beaumont, and at the Badlands Landfill just east of Moreno Valley,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. Kernkamp explained. Savings also accrue from the deferral of expansion projects, he said.

Over the next year, county landfill managers plan to test the new tarp designs in side-by-side comparisons at the two landfills.

The new tarp program received the California Counties Innovation Award in September, one of only two such awards given statewide in 2011.

The tarps are made from a High Density Polyethylene woven material sandwiched by layers of Low Density Polyethylene with a thickness of 24 mil.

“Most of the tarp material research was focused on how the cable -- which the dozers attach to pull the tarp -- can be redesigned and reinforced to minimize tearing,” Kernkamp explained. “Our research showed that while there are manufacturers who sell tarps for landfill purposes, there are no existing landfill tarp industry specifications. Our efforts will hopefully lead to that. The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,”

Garbage is also near and dear to Lake Elsinore. Situated just east of the 15 Freeway off Temescal Canyon Road sits the privately held El Sobrante Landfill. Owned and operated by Waste Management Inc., the site is 1,322 acres, with a 495-acre landfill footprint and a 698-acre habitat conservation area.

“Waste from Lake Elsinore and Wildomar goes to El Sobrante,” Kernkamp said, noting that the average county resident disposes of 4.3 pounds of trash per day.

And there’s room for more, Kernkamp said, explaining that El Sobrante isn’t expected to reach capacity until 2045.

“Riverside County has plenty of landfill space,” he continued. The Badlands Landfill doesn’t reach capacity until 2024; Lamb Canyon won’t fill until 2021. Both have room to expand, Kernkamp explained.

The El Sobrante, Lamb Canyon and Badlands landfills take in 95 percent of the county’s waste, Kernkamp said. They comprise three of the county’s seven active fills. Throughout Riverside County, there are 32 closed landfills, he said.

Flea Market struggling in Arena

Thousands of pumpkins,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. baking potatoes the size of softballs and concrete lawn ornaments are among the draws to Heck’s Farm Market.

There are bins of squash and jars of locally made jams, salsa and pickles.Whilst oil paintings for sale are not deadly,

But in a grove of towering pine trees adjacent to the market along Highway 14 is a secondhand world with a tenuous future.

Old dishes, tools, sporting goods, toys, appliances and record albums are all up for sale.

Don’t like the price? Make an offer. That’s the way of a flea market.

Or, at least the way it used to work.

The offers to buy don’t come as often, revenues and the number of customers are down, vendors are few and for those who remain, some no longer scour garage sales, auctions and closeouts looking for additions to their collections. Instead, their sole focus is to get rid of their inventory and close up shop for good.

“You make enough to survive,” said Glenn Brookhyser, 62, of Mazomanie. “You’re always hoping for a big sale.”

Flea markets have been around for decades and have filled many weekends for those searching for bargains and looking to interact with the personalities who sell.

Some, like the flea market at Heck’s, are held every weekend from April through October. Others occur only a few times a year and coincide with community festivals. The listing also included the Seven Mile Fair south of Milwaukee. Established in 1961, it features hundreds of vendors over 40 acres, is open year round and even charges admission.

Heck’s was never of that magnitude and has always been free to visit. At one time, the market had dozens of vendors who filled the lawn where pumpkins are now displayed. The numbers have dwindled as vendors died and rummaging went digital because of websites.

“Some days, they tell me they had a good day and it was $30,” said Gary Heck, who rents space to the vendors. “This is a dying breed.the worldwide rubber hose market is over $56 billion annually.”

Heck charges the vendors $5 a day or $120 a year. At one time, he had 20 yearly tenants. That number is down to six or seven. “This is their life,” Heck said. “It’s what they do.”

Depending on the weekend and the weather, more than a dozen vendors can be found mixed under the shade of the trees and over the caramel-colored carpet of dead pine needles. Some sell wooden lawn ornaments, others handmade aprons and pot holders. Another, boxes of cassette tapes. Each has one to five tables and maybe some stuff spread out on the ground.

The two largest vendors have years of experience and thousands of items on dozens of tables, in beat-up trailers and in buildings made of plastic tarps, PVC pipe, lumber and plywood. A few have roofs made with old billboard signs,Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a RUBBER MATS . with the logos for a Burger King Whopper and Miller Lite beer still visible.

Glenn Brookhyser has seven trailers and five tents brimming with items. At home in Mazomanie, he has four buildings totaling 2,870 square feet jammed with just about everything imaginable. All of it collected over the last 20 years.

“I know where everything is located,” Brookhyser said. “It’s a very interesting business. If you want to call it a business.”

Brookhyser, a retired computer consultant and air purifier salesman who was put of work thanks to the statewide smoking ban, has been selling antiques and flea market ware with his wife for more than 20 years. They used to sell on consignment at shops in Mount Horeb and Sauk City but now just sell at Heck’s.

“We both have enough to sell for the rest of our lives,” Brookhyser said.

Larry Shimniok, 79, the other large seller at the market and perhaps one of the most colorful,Our high risk merchant account was down for about an hour and a half, has about 20 tables in the open and a makeshift building he calls “Kmart the third.” The 50-foot-long, 11-foot-wide structure — complete with used carpeting on the dirt floor and lighting strung together with extension cords — is filled with used and new but discounted items bought years ago from Kmarts and other businesses that were in the process of closing.

Traveling in the company of thieves

Taking advantage of the off-season rates, my wife Diane and I spent a couple days at the beach in South Carolina. Such vacations are not for amateurs. Even a short time away from home requires tremendous logistical maneuvering.

You have to drag along enough stuff so that when you get to your destination, you can recreate a reasonable facsimile of your home. Fortunately, Diane is the one who frets over all the weighty issues, like whether or not to take lawn chairs, while my negligible contribution is in the muscle department, lugging things back and forth.100 oil paintings for sale was used to link the lamps together.

One of the most frequently overlooked vacation skills is the ability to hide things. It starts before you even leave the house. We left a key behind, so that Mike, our neighbor, could come by occasionally to entertain our spoiled cat, who complains for a solid week whenever we leave him alone. We showed Mike the secret hiding place for our house key and he wasn't very impressed.

I grew up with an open-door policy, so far as the house and car are concerned. This was based on my father's "we have nothing worth stealing" philosophy and the deeply held belief that a broken window would cost more than anything a thief could possibly take.

But now, we always lock up the house and hide the key. Diane has warned me not to disclose the secret location of our hidden key. All I can tell you is that it is in an extremely clever hiding place.

Once we got to the beach,Demand for allergy Floor tiles could rise earlier than normal this year. all I could think about was that scary American Express commercial, showing a thief rifling through people's belongings. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld says that at the beach you should hide your wallet in your shoe, because no one will ever think of looking there, especially if you push it all the way down to the toe. I admit that I have done this. But what other options are there?

Some people use those nerdy plastic pouches that you pin to your swimsuit or wear around your neck. I can't believe those things are very secure and I doubt that they are completely waterproof. Besides looking dorky, they are not big enough to hold your wallet, the hotel room plastic key card, your cell phone, your Kindle and your car keys. You would need to wear a keg around your neck like a Saint Bernard.

For about $55, you can buy a pair of flip-flops such as the Reef Stash Sandals, that have a secret compartment in the sole, where you can hide small valuables. The assumption here is that a thief would probably think that it was too unsanitary to mess with your flip-flops, even if they were suspiciously thick.

At one point, we went to one of those swim-up bars, which are sort of cool, but present the dilemma of where to keep your money to pay for the drinks. I put some cash in a baggy and kept it under my hat. I don't know where the people without hats were stashing their money and I'm not sure I want to know. This patent infringement case relates to retractable offshore merchant account ,

There is also the issue of where to put your valuables when you leave the hotel room. The usual sock drawer or under the mattress are ill-advised. I hate to give the impression that I'm paranoid or that I don't trust the housekeeping staff, but hotel rooms are notoriously insecure, given all the passkeys floating around,Als lichtbron wordt een cube puzzle gebruikt, sliding glass doors and those unreliable card keys.

We decided to use the in-room safe, although some people advise against this as well. Ours was one of those electronic ones, which you lock by entering a four-digit code and then later open using the same code.

I read on a couple of travel blogs that all these safes have a master override code that the management can use to open it in case you forget your code. It was claimed that some hotels leave "0000" or "1234" as the override code. After reading this, I checked out our safe but neither of these codes would open it.However, if you buy them after the formal season has ended, it is much easier for you to get a cheap zentai. Of course, at this time, the style as well as the color of the zentai will be in narrow range so that your choice will be limited. Your valuables are only as secure as the secrecy of the override code.

Some people use the office hotel safe, signing things in and out, while others opt for those containers that look like familiar products, but have built-in secret compartments. Former detective Sgt. Kevin Coffey from Corporate Travel Safety refers to these as "diversion safes."

The Pleasures of Cooking While Drunk with Hannah Hart

Hannah Hart is funny when she's drunk. She's funny when she's sober too, but when she's drunk her eyes get all droopy and she asks questions like, "Do you ever notice that when someone makes something from scratch, that suddenly means they're better than you?" Hart poses this question while clutching a glass of rosé on the most recent episode of her Web-video cooking series, My Drunk Kitchen. The rest of the episode features Hart drinking the wine; mixing milk, sugar and vanilla in a Ziploc bag; drinking more wine; wondering how to turn the Ziploc bag into ice cream; dropping the bag on the floor; drinking more wine and then eating store-bought ice cream from the carton. "I made this from the freezer," she explains at the end.

Hart, 24, has been posting My Drunk Kitchen videos for less than three months. So far, there are eight episodes. From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires, The concept is pretty simple. "In the beginning of the video, I'm sober," explains Hart, who has agreed to meet up with me for an interview. "And in the end, I'm drunk. Maybe if I'm lucky, I've cooked something too." (See the top 10 ridiculously strong drinks.)

So far, the most popular episode is "Brunch," in which Hart drinks several mimosas and tries to make pancakes. "At brunch people whine about problems that aren't actually problems, so let's do a little bit of that,The newest Ipod nano 5th is incontrovertibly a step up from last year's model," she says in the video that has been viewed over 700,000 times on YouTube. In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, "I think Whole Foods has really gone downhill," At one point in the show, she pours trail mix into the pancake batter. A Google search tells me that trail-mix pancake recipes actually exist, but for Hart, they seem to be an impromptu ingredient addition inspired by the two champagne bottles' worth of mimosas.

My Drunk Kitchen is the best cooking show I've seen since that one Paula's Home Cooking episode in which Paula Dean makes a doughnut-and-bacon hamburger. I had many questions for Hart. Unfortunately, TIME made me ask them sober. (See a video of how to protect your iPad when cooking.)

Why did you start drunk cooking?
I was cat sitting for my sister. I found a bottle of wine, so I wrote something online like, "I'm going to drink this bottle of wine and then eat something." My former roommate — I'd just moved from San Francisco to New York City — replied and said, "Man, I miss the times when you'd drunk cook for me!" So I made her a video. That became the first episode. My friend told me the video was funny and that I should make it public. So I did.

The grilled-cheese sandwich one?
Yep, except halfway through the video I realized I didn't have any cheese. So I just buttered some sourdough bread and heated it in a pan.Largest Collection of billabong boardshorts, Here's a word of advice: if you want to make grilled cheese, make sure that you actually have cheese.

Do you really get drunk in all of your videos, or are you faking it?
I really do get that drunk. It takes about an hour to shoot each video, so I'm actually the drunkest after it's over. For the ice cream one, I was with my sister and her husband,A glass bottle is a bottle created from glass. and I really just let myself go. I finished the video and I remember walking over the couch and lying down. I woke up hours later with a plate of chicken nuggets on my chest and my sister leaning over me going, "Eat these." The sun had already set and everything. (See a video of a beer-tasting test.)

Do you drink a lot?
I hardly drink outside the videos. Honestly? It's expensive. If I'm at a bar, I'll probably order a PBR [Pabst Blue Ribbon] and nurse it the entire night. That's right, I'm that person.

What My Drunk Kitchen food tasted the worst?
The ice cream was pretty terrible. Or the meatballs — they were just balls of uncooked meat.

Popular Our Lady of the Sierras in Hereford, AZ, destroyed by Monument Fire

Built in 1991 by Gerald and Patricia Chouinard, transplants from Illinois, in response to their being led by their faith, the Our Lady of the Sierras Shrine, one of the more popular tourist attractions in the area of Sierra Vista, AZ, has been destroyed by the Monument Fire, started in the nearby Coronado National Memorial. From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires,

The Our Lady of the Sierras Shrine has been a popular tourist/religious attraction for over two decades and was opened to the public in 1998. Residents of Sierra Vista, Hereford and Palominas could see the 75 foot Celtic cross gracing the chapel grounds for miles and at night, it lent a comforting glow to weary travelers; standing next to the cross, a 30 foot Madonna figure. The shrine, which receives approximately 3,500 visitors and religious pilgrims each month, was at one point considered safe from the fire due to its being bypassed,A glass bottle is a bottle created from glass. some say miraculously. However, this past Friday, the 16th of June, the winds shifted and the chapel was lost.

While the buildings on the grounds were burned by the fire, the cross and the Madonna figure still stand, almost as a testament to the faith, courage and resiliance of a community that has banded together in the face of tragedy.

The Chouinards are currently in seclusion and are refusing to speak to reporters but it is announced on their website they intend to rebuild the chapel. The newest Ipod nano 5th is incontrovertibly a step up from last year's model,

Monument Fire shows signs of abating

Now having consumed more than 19,000 acres of Arizona desert, the Monument Fire has become more manageable following two rough days of hot, windy weather.

With the Type 1 Management Team cautiously giving a 15% containment on the Monument Fire and the weather working with them, instead of against, in the form of reduced winds, the fire has begun to slow down and is currently primarily in the Miller Canyon area. With only one reported injury, a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, the residents of the threatened areas have, for the most part, heeded the evacuation orders given by the Cochise County Sheriff's Department. However, there were several residents refusing to leave and it is unknown at this time if they eventually departed.

Fort Huachuca Fire

Fort Huachuca, the Army's Military Intelligence training base, reported a fire early yesterday afternoon. Initially, it was thought to be related to the Monument Fire but it was later discovered the cause was due to a bulldozer creating sparks and igniting the tinder-dry grasses around it. With no recordable rainfall since December, 2010, severe drought conditions exist and the Coronado National Memorial, part of which abuts the fort, was closed to the public three days prior to the ignition of the Monument Fire.

Evacuees still not able to go home

Several evacuation shelters have been arranged in various parts of Southern Cochise County. In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, Located at Buena High School, the former Apache Middle School as well as Bisbee High School, evacuees are taking advantage of the safety of the shelters. Though there are a high number of people reported staying in shelters, many have evacuated to other locales such as Tucson or Phoenix.Shop a wide selection of billabong outlet products in the evo shop. In addition to the two-legged evacuees, the Buena High School shelter is reporting nearly 30 evacuees of the four-legged variety.

The shelters are reporting they still have room for evacuees and are asking for donations of towels, bedding and, especially, pillow cases. Also, to help care for pets being sheltered there, blankets, beds and dog food would be welcomed.

The Red Cross is sharing with reporters the overwhelming response from both the community and the surrounding communities with regard to goods and are now asking for monetary donations only. In addition to providing food and shelter, the Red Cross has brought in counselors to help evacuees who have lost their homes.
