Among the impoverished drug addicts in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, crack cocaine users face an extra hurdle to feed their addiction.

Heroin users can pick up clean needles from needle-exchange programs or the city's controversial safe-injection site, which have at least partly curbed risky needle sharing. But crack pipes are more difficult to come by.

Some crack smokers can afford to buy small glass or Pyrex stems to use as pipes. Others fashion makeshift pipes from bottles, cans or even hollow car antennas. And in many cases, they just simply share, potentially putting themselves at risk of contracting disease.

The Heat is On!

Camp Airy is one place the heat is (almost) welcome.

They really weren't affected too much with the heat. The camp has a "Hot Day Schedule" when the temperatures go sky high, which means more pool time and more water related activities. Relay races incorporate water and hoses, kickball incorporated kiddie pools as bases and there were even oversized slip-n-slides for the campers. There are hydration stations all over camp with huge vats of water and Gatorade for the boys to drink all day long.

The camp purchased about 40 garden sprayers and filled them with water. Staff walked around camp squirting the boys with water. It helped to cool them off while they were having fun. They loved it.

As I conclude in the column, however, the fact that two of the Republicans have finally decided to debate one another on their records is a good sign for the primary campaign, and for Republican voters. As much as people like to invoke Reagan's 11th Commandment, the purpose of a primary is comparative shopping. We're looking not just for the candidate who can rip Barack Obama,the Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels of the rectum. but who can defend themselves and their own record under heavy fire from the opposing side(s). That may not be as important as the policies they espouse and the experience they bring, but it's a necessary skill set, and it needs to be put on display before Republicans start casting votes in primaries and caucuses a few months from now.

Confessions of a Comic-Con 'Booth Babe'

Comic-Con is a sweaty place. A hundred and twenty-five thousand human bodies male, mostly all rubbing against one another, all feverishly envisioning naked Chewbaccas rolling around in piles of limited-edition memorabilia... it's a nerd sauna in this here convention center. Which is why, when I stumbled upon one Lynhthy Nguyen in the video-game area of the Exhibition Hall last week, I was astounded (and kind of annoyed) that someone wearing thigh-high pleather boots could be so, well, dry.Great Rubber offers promotional usb keychains, Okay, yes, she was wearing tiny shorts and a tinier t-shirt, but still vexing. There I was dripping with perspiration, ready to pass out or sell a kidney for some air-conditioning, and this gal is smiling and passing out flyers for some Sam Jackson animated movie thing. I felt like a troll who had wandered out from under a bridge and run smack into a fairy princess. A very sexy fairy princess.

After a brief "Hey, would you be interested in talking to me about your job?" followed by an enthusiastic, jumping-up-and-down "YES YES YES!" Lynhthy (pronounced Lynn-tea) led me over to a small stage where we sat on some vinyl stools facing the hall. As my sticky thighs slowly affixed themselves to the hot seat, I saw Lynhthy's eyes widen at the torrent of water flooding my face and neck area. She quickly grabbed a piece of cardboard swag from the table and started fanning me. "Why are you so sweaty?" asked some guy who had been hovering around the table, directing the question toward Lyhnthy's boots. To which Lyhnthy replied: "Because she's hot duh!"

I realized, right then, that Lyhnthy was my best friend forever and I would probably die in a fire for her if necessary. She picked up the pace of her fanning and said, "This is my first Comic-Con, but I've done spokesmodeling at lots of other things like car shows and adult-novelty cons." Fan fan fan. "Is it different? Do you like it?" Lyhnthy stopped moving for a second, cocking her head to one side. "I like it. Nerds are polite. They're usually too scared to touch me at all, so I don't have to worry about that."

"Have you had nerds try to touch you inappropriately at other cons then?" At this point I felt very much like that lady on Law & Order SVU, Olivia Benson: Show me on the doll where the nerds touched you, Lyhnthy. Also, I was beginning to think I might faint. She nodded. "A few times." She pantomimed having a man's arm around her (low) waist area and pushing it away with her own hand behind her. "Discreet," I said, impressed. She smiled and fanned me some more.

"Are you into any of this nerd stuff?" I asked, preparing to be surprised.

"No, not really. I like gadgets."

"Oh, what kind of gadgets?"

"Just, you know..If so, you may have a kidney stone .. gadgets."

"I think the hitters know that they can't go up there [in batting practice] and just air it out every swing and try to hit home runs every swing, because you don't really leave anything left for the game," Wilson said. "In the past, we got into that a little bit I think, but this year it seems like everyone is a lot more focused on doing their work and showing up ready to play."

First baseman Mitch Moreland agreed that pace is the most important factor to staying healthy in the heat.

"Our staff does a great job, like today we're hitting inside," Moreland said. "If you do that -- one day on, one day off, and give your body a little time to rest, I think we're alright."

Beltre doesn't like being "cheerleader":

Rangers All-Star third baseman Adrian Beltre left last Friday's game with what was revealed to be a grade one hamstring strain and put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Beltre, who said he hasn't had many issues with injuries in his career, isn't enjoying his time off.

"I hate being on the bench," Beltre said. "I guess I have to be a cheerleader now. Nobody wants to get hurt. I want to be out there with the guys, but there's nothing I can do about it [right now.]"

Grade one strains are the least-severe variety and Beltre is expected to miss two to three weeks.Prior to Aion Kinah I leaned toward the former, He said he is pushing for only two, and would be eligible to return August 7. He can't work out the injured hamstring right now, but is using ice and ultrasound among other treatments for the leg every day.

Beltre leads the Rangers in RBI (76), is second in hits (107) and tied for second in runs (61). He said the injury was poorly timed, as he feels he plays better in the second half of the year.

A creamy white film grows on the surface of the wine, rather like the mould on a Camembert. It spreads out completely over the surface, creating an impermeable blanket which shuts out oxygen and allows further flavour changes to take place.

But enough of how this delicious wine is made, how should you drink it? For a start, throw away any silly little sherry glasses. If they are the sort that have a waist and tend to be filled to the brim, they should go straight to the glass recycling centre.

Sherry should be drunk from a small tulip-shaped glass, half-filled, so you can swirl it around and capture those aromas.

Fino and manzanilla should be chilled, and the best way to do this is by keeping the bottle in the fridge, to be ready whenever you want a glass.

But the real key to enjoying these light, dry sherries is to drink them quickly once the bottle is open. They say that a true sherry-lover can tell the difference between a freshly-opened bottle and one opened the previous day. I don't think that is too critical, but I prefer to finish a bottle of fino or manzanilla within a week or a fortnight at most.

I cannot drink manzanilla without something to nibble. Salted nuts, particularly almonds, add an authentic flavour of Jerez, then move on to slices of Serrano ham, a few olives and maybe a freshly-peeled prawn or two. Bite-sized pieces of chorizo sausage, anchovies, manchego cheese with piquant peppers and small crispy fried salt-cod fishcakes are other good accompaniments.

Stable Enough for a Pregnancy?

Special Spaces St. Louis is helping fulfill their dreams. They recently gave the girls a free bedroom makeover.

Todd and Lacy Gambill, co-directors of Special Spaces St. Louis, always wanted to form a children's charity. So, when an episode of the ABC reality show "Secret Millionaire " featured the national charity, based in Knoxville, Tenn.,I have never solved a Rubik's magic cube . they knew instantly it was their path to helping children.

The Gambills, along with Lacy's sister Jaime, her husband, Joe Reed, and their son Nathan, 10, from Elsberry, formed Special Spaces St. Louis in March.

Special Spaces St. Louis has transformed two bedrooms this summer. The bedrooms are designed around the child's favorite colors, themes and special features. "We build custom-made desks, and some of the rooms get personalized touches with embroidery."

The renovation is completed in one day. Every bedroom design is unique to the child, and 80 percent of the room is completed on site, including building the furniture and creating the window treatments, bedding and pillows.

Cheyenna's room was sponsored by Ryan Moore, 10, and his parents Rob and Amy Moore from Eldon, Mo. "Ryan saw Special Spaces on the reality show 'Secret Millionaire' and at that moment decided to sponsor a child," says Rob Moore. Ryan used his birthday party to collect funds for Cheyenna's room in lieu of birthday gifts, and the Moores, who own a construction company, brought in their employees to help with the one-day makeover.

Randy Ames, Cheyenna's dad says, "This was so unexpected. We were so amazed to be selected. The bedroom makeover gave my daughter more privacy and more room to move around."

"I was just like so happy to get all new colors in my bedroom," says Cheyenna. "My bedroom didn't have a door, now it does, and I got a new clean carpet."

Cheyenna spends two hours a day on breathing treatments plus she takes antibiotics three times a day. "I have a good clean place to go when I'm feeling bad,the oil paintings for sale by special invited artist for 2011," says Cheyenna.

Randy said Cheyenna told him, "This is more than I could of ever ask for."

A few area businesses are jumping on board, too. Discount Decorating Outlet in St. Charles provided free fabric to make window treatments, bedding and pillows. "We also get discounts at Old Monroe Lumber Company in Old Monroe, Mo.," says Lacy Gambill.

Special Spaces St. Louis works with child-life specialists at local children's hospitals to identify and select the children. The room renovations are scheduled based on the severity of the child's health condition.

The local chapter is looking for volunteers. The organization needs seamstresses and partnerships with furniture companies, hardware and paint stores and home décor stores interested in sponsoring the rooms.

The nonprofit also plans to create fun experiences for the children while their rooms are being renovated, such as a day of bowling, a trip to Six Flags or a Cardinals baseball outing.

Three out of four people believe the improved terms of Ireland's EU-IMF bailout deal came about as a result of the crisis in Greece rather than the negotiating skills of the Government, according to a Sunday Independent/Quantum Research poll.

The finding that 75 per cent credit the Greek crisis for a better deal will take some of the gloss off the impression the Government has sought to create.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Finance Minister Michael Noonan had hoped that the outcome of the EU leaders' summit last Thursday would generate sufficient political capital to implement another austere Budget.

The Government will make preparations for the Budget, to involve a 3.6bn package of taxes and cuts, when politicians return from an eight- week holiday in September.

Last week further evidence emerged that the Cabinet intends to focus on social welfare cuts rather than a reduction in the massive public-sector wage bill, which seems set to remain protected under the Croke Park Agreement.

The Sunday Independent has seen a report, sent by the Government to the EU/ECB/IMF troika, which outlines in detail the huge spend on social welfare.

The Government's approach to tackling the huge cost of public-sector pay is not supported by the public, however. An Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll last week revealed that the public want further pay cuts for public servants rather than redundancies to reduce the 18bn budget deficit.

Asked which option they favoured to reduce the public sector pay bill, 58 per cent said to reduce pay and 27 per cent opted for redundancies.

Yesterday, European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton sought to dispute the overwhelming public view that the Government got a lucky break in Brussels last week.

She claimed there was an "emerging view" at the EU summit last Thursday that a bailout interest rate cut should only apply to Greece and not to Ireland and Portugal.

She intimated that Finland and the Netherlands were "more circumspect" than France and Germany about the improved terms. "We resisted that successfully. Negotiation skills were important," she told the Sunday Independent. But Ms Creighton also admitted that the crisis in Greece had contributed to a successful outcome for Ireland.

Economist Colm McCarthy said that the revised deal was "good" from Ireland's perspective, but he also said it would be "unwise to exaggerate".

Roger Kerr: The happy warrior

Roger Kerr doesn't even wince when I ask whether it feels as though everyone is already writing his obituary.

After 25 years of banging the Business Roundtable drum, Kerr doesn't need to be asked twice if he'd like the opportunity to bang it a little more. And although he predictably rails against personality cults, who wouldn't enjoy the sort of attention he's been getting of late?

A recent Herald editorial described the gong he received in the latest Queen's Birthday honours as "perhaps the most deserved" on this year's list, and suggested he'd had a greater influence on New Zealand's economic direction over the past few decades "than anybody outside the state service, or possibly within it".

There have been compliments from less obvious quarters, too, including several Labour MPs, as well as others "who might have seen me as a tribal enemy or something". Such tributes,As many processors back away from offshore merchant account , he beams, "mean more to me than the award itself".

Whether the 66-year-old might have got the same reaction had he not discovered eight months ago that he might not have much longer to live is a moot point. Regardless of whether you agree with the Roundtable's message, few dispute that Kerr has mostly been an unusually personable messenger.

Even now, he seems to have accepted with extraordinary equanimity the possibility that his time may well be up.

When he discovered his first melanoma three years ago, it wasn't a complete shock. His brother, renowned cardiac surgeon Alan Kerr, had had a similar brush with skin cancer six months previously - the legacy, it seems, of too many childhood summers spent making hay on the family farm.

Unlike his older brother, Roger discovered his melanoma far too late, and last October he found out it had spread. Although he has yet to feel any physical side effects, his doctors have told him the average life expectancy for his type of aggressive cancer is six to nine months.

"Probably those numbers will start shifting a bit because there's a lot of developments going on in melanoma science right now, particularly a couple of new drugs which are the first serious breakthroughs for a long time. But they're not king hits by any means."

He has scoured the world for the best possible treatment options, which has included trips to Australia and the United States. But he has concluded that the treatment he is receiving here is the best available, and is participating in a clinical trial of a new drug that is so far proving promising.

"I've moved from Plan A which didn't work as expected, to Plan B which I'm hoping will work, and so on down the line... If Plan B doesn't work, I'm thinking about what could be Plan C and Plan D, and it could be something offshore. But the one I'm on now is producing results which in some cases are long-lasting, so I'm just hoping that I'm in that category."

Naturally, his wife of just over a year, former Act president Catherine Isaac, is hoping so too. Kerr concedes his prognosis has been particularly difficult for her.

"I'm pretty philosophical about it. Whatever will be will be. But we got married at the beginning of last year, so it's pretty tough for her."

Helpfully, Isaac works in a room next to his in central Wellington, with her PR firm Awaroa Partners. But it would appear that neither of them is making retirement plans just yet.

Kerr struggles to think of anything else he'd rather be doing than rifling through the perilous piles of paper that smother almost every surface in his spacious office.

His brother, when he retired, decided to spend several months each year performing pediatric surgery in Palestine for an American charity.

"I think that's terrific.They take the RUBBER SHEET to the local co-op market. What could be a more satisfying thing to do?... But I think I get a bit better at my job each year. Someone might tell me at some stage: 'You're dreaming; you've gone senile'. But I've been saying to myself why would I want to give it up?"

Before working for the Roundtable, Kerr spent 10 years with Foreign Affairs, then 10 years with Treasury. Since then, he's considered jobs in Australia and elsewhere. But he has never been seriously tempted by any of them.

"I've never found one that's been more interesting than what I've kept on doing here... And while you're prepared to slog your guts out to do that, I always wondered whether I would feel the same in Australia or some other place."

Providing a favorable customer experience for valued credit cardholders has always been a priority among lenders, and in the post-CARD Act environment it has become even more important. One main challenge facing issuer's in their quest to maintain their existing customer base is balancing fraud protection with the point of sale experience.

Frequent international travelers are a particular customer population that makes this challenge even more difficult for lenders. This segment is highly vulnerable to being attacked with fraud while traveling abroad and is simultaneously sensitive to a card disruption at the point of sale. Based on lender specific fraud strategies, issuers often decline a purchase and shut down a card for future use in order to verify out-of-pattern or suspicious spending activity. The customer is then left abroad with no use of their card and many times without appropriate awareness of the reason behind the card shutdown [until they contact the lender].

ACG suggests two approaches to navigate this difficult balancing act in a manner that will improve customer satisfaction and manage risk. Historic behaviors can be reviewed over extended periods of time in order to appropriately identify customers who belong to this population.the TMJ pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs.
