A dog’s story: from misery to a happy home

Suzannah J. Vanson is one of the Quebecers who have volunteered to offer a foster home to the more than 500 dogs seized by animal-welfare officials in a raid on a kennel in the Outaouais region in September. I am not very old – probably under three. Until very recently, I had never seen the light. I didn’t feel the ground. I didn’t know warm touches or a warm bed. Fresh air was foreign to me. I was used to breed, litter after litter. My puppies were all I had and I took care of them well, even though I was sad and in a lot of pain from a large bladder stone that would soon be discovered.

One day we were all taken away from the puppy mill and brought to a new place, a shelter. I was part of the largest-ever puppy-mill seizure in Quebec or Canada. I sat with my five babies, scared and alone, in a cage. A woman came one day, and I heard her say, “It doesn’t matter which one I take – whoever needs it the most.” The vets pointed to me.

The next thing I knew my babies and I were in a cage in a car – that was scary. Then I was brought into a room that was bright and clean, and so quiet. I had never known quiet before. There was a cage, and warm, clean bedding, and bowls of fresh water.

Food was brought to me every four hours. The woman kept talking to me, but I made sure to hang my head low, never to look at her, and to stay in the back of the cage.

After a few days I got curious about this woman, and I would peek around the corner at her. That was the start of what she calls my rehab into normal life.

The woman kept calling me Amy. No one ever called me a name before, or sat with me to pet me. She always cleaned up after me. I never sat in my own filth any more.

The woman kept coming into the room and just sitting with me. I wasn’t sure why, or what she wanted. She held my babies, but always gave them back. She offered me cheese, but I was too frightened to take it, so she left it for me and I ate it as soon as she left. Slowly, with time,They take the China Porcelain tile to the local co-op market. On warm days she sits outside with me and holds me. I am scared of the bright sunshine and the noises, but I am starting to look around. This world seems to be full of so much I have never seen before.

I feel happy when I see her now. I even caught myself wagging my bum. What a curious feeling – can it be joy?

The woman brought toys. My babies wanted them, but I think I liked them even more. I never had a toy before. The woman brought many more, so we all had toys to keep next to us.

One day when the woman was sitting with us, playing with my puppies, I suddenly had the urge to do something I had never done before. I got up and I nudged her with my nose: “Pay attention to me, lady. Those kids can wait.” The woman turned around and realized it was me asking, and she started to cry. She seemed to think she had “got me” – that I had made the leap from puppy-mill dog to a friend who lives in a home.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s public lighting section is now available to carry out works for the general public as part of plans to deal with stringent Government cuts.

A combined smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls is helping create a comfortable and safe environment for patients, visitors and staff at Salford Royal Hospital’s new 90 million Hope Building.

Designed by architects HKS and constructeceramic magic cube for the medical,d by Balfour Beatty, as part of the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust’s 200 million redevelopment programme, the five storey Hope Building houses a new A&E department as well as providing 242 beds, an emergency assessment unit and critical care facilities.

SE Controls developed the fire engineered smoke and natural ventilation solution around the original fire specification and worked closely with the consultants to create an effective and reliable system that maximises comfort, safety and energy efficiency by linking in to both the building management system (BMS) and the separate fire alarm system.

Within the hospital, the smoke and natural ventilation system is split into two zones to allow maximum control over the temperatures and ventilation needs in both the main concourse and the atrium areas of the building, by using a series of louvres, roof vents and atrium vents controlled by the BMS.

In normal operation, localised sensors throughout the building monitor the temperatures and their patterns of change, feeding constant information to the BMS, which manages the proportional opening and closing of the vents and louvres. This not only ensures that temperatures remain within specified limits but also that the building has a constant flow of fresh air.

SE Controls’ solution also takes account of adverse weather conditions, such as excessively high winds or rain, to ensure that vents are automatically closed to stop the ingress of water and limit any possible damage.

Chinese Painters’ Works Displayed at Salmagundi Club

For a year, painters of Chinese descent from North America, Asia, Europe and Australia have sent submissions of their artwork to New Tang Dynasty Television’s offices in New York. A panel of judges has deliberated on the 140-plus entries and narrowed the selection down to 51 paintings, which will be on exhibit at the Salmagundi Club through Saturday, Dec. 3.

These paintings represent the best works from finalists of the Third Annual Chinese International Figure Painting Competition, which is part of a series of competitions hosted by NTDTV. The competitions are open chiefly to Chinese and overseas Chinese artists in several traditional Chinese or Western arts: violin, piano, classical Chinese dance, martial arts, vocal arts, photography, Han couture, and Chinese culinary arts.

The exhibit kicked off on the evening of Monday, Nov. 28 with an awards ceremony. Michelle Chen from the U.S. came away with the biggest honor, a gold prize for her piece, titled “My Mom.” The painting depicts a baby looking up in wonder at his mother, who is doing Falun Gong meditation. In his eyes, she is larger than life; in successive dimensions, her body takes on a larger and grander form until in the final iteration she sits like a Buddha in the cosmos.They take the China Porcelain tile to the local co-op market. Chen is a practitioner of Falun Gong, a spiritual meditation practice based on the principles of truth, compassion, and forbearance. Practitioners live by these principles in their daily lives and cultivate toward a higher realm.

“A lot of wonderous things in cultivation practice are hard to describe in words, but can be expressed in brushstrokes,” Chen said. “Oil painting can depict what the eyes cannot see. Painting itself is also a self-searching, elevating process.”

Silver winner Shang-ta Yeh from Taiwan won with a painting called “Be Prepared,” which captures the moment of intense concentration before a classical vocalist opens with his first note. In it, an Asian man stands before a piano with his eyes closed. The orchestra begins to play behind him and yet time seems to stand still as he gathers his feelings before he steps into the spotlight.

The judging committee chose the winning pieces for their expression of traditional virtues and values using classical realism methods and superior oil painting techniques. Artist helps his students paint what they see

After a lifetime of practicing art, Jim Strong paints what he sees. Even then, the subject doesn’t always agree with his vision.

Strong related one example of the viewer’s subjectivity of art:

Andy Towle, Roundup staff photographer snapped a memorable photo of a cowboy in the Payson Rodeo parade one year. Strong, intrigued by Towle’s photo, asked if he could use it as a model for a painting.

“He was a great face,” said Strong.

Towle gave him the photo. The finished piece pleased Strong.

“That is one of my better paintings,” said Strong.

Strong showed the painting in various shows, always giving Towle credit for the photo,which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, but neither he nor Towle knew the identity of the cowboy.

A few years later, a woman attending the GCC art show recognized the cowboy as her husband. When she brought him in to see the painting, he said,If so, you may have a cube puzzle .

That illustrates the mystery of painting. The artist infuses each piece with his own personality and perspective to create a vision wholly his own. Although his wife knew who it was, the cowboy could not or did not want to see him represented the way Strong saw him.

The challenge for the painter is to capture the essence of the subject, infuse the piece with light, texture and contrast to create depth that captures the viewer’s interest.

On top of the artistic interpretation, each painter must ensure any image they use for inspiration is their own — or they have permission from the photographer to use the photo. Strong teaches his students that paintings must have original content or acknowledgement from the creator.

“Don’t take from another artist,” he said.

When reading the history of painting from the time of the cave painters to modern times, it is clear artists have tried to capture the essence of their subject.

Yet, how can the aspiring painter learn to go from concept to finished piece? A blank white canvass seems overwhelmingly empty.

Enter Strong. “When I learned he was an artist, I said, if you give classes — I’ll take them,” she said.

The intensity of her painting assaults the eye when opening the door to Strong’s painting class. Her canvass glows with a yellow moon in a blue and purple evening sky. The moon reflects off a lake. A boat lies moored near the moon shadow on the water. The colors provoke an emotional response. The difference between the moon and the sky, the shadows of the rocks and trees adds drama telling the story of an evening in nature next to water.

The surrealist representation of the Havana park of the same name sold earlier this month at Sotheby's fall sale of Latin American art for $10,000.

It was formerly owned by Hampton's mother Alba Marlene Zunzunegui,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, whose sole possessions when she arrived in America circa 1959 were a handful of rolled canvases – including "Parque Central."

"Just to see it hanging there, one room away from 'Watermelon Slices' [by Rufino Tamayo], which sold for $2.2 million, was vindication of her life's work… [and] validated her opinion that [Len's art] was of lasting interest," Hampton said about the Sotheby's auction on Nov. 16 and 17.

That interest, financially speaking, will now be used to finance a Cuban expedition for Hampton and her sister. The two will travel to Havana to not only stop by the famous park to see Len's inspiration but also to uncover a portrait of their mother painted by Len nearly 60 years ago when Zunzunegui was just a teenager.

That painting, which once hung in Havana's Museum of Fine Arts, may still be there or it may not, Hampton said.

"But we intend to attempt to see it and her world for ourselves," she added. "It almost seems like in death she is pulling us back to a country we could have never visited before.Unlike traditional high risk merchant account ,"

Unlike her friend and compatriot Len – a tortured artist, whose impoverished parents gave him to the church at a young age – Zunzunegui was an art enthusiast from a wealthy Cuban family, which allowed her to buy paintings to support local artists. One of her favorites was Len, who purportedly placed a hidden "A" in each one of his paintings in her honor.

Born in 1932, allegedly with syphilis, Len was a surrealist and a bus driver. He eventually became Cuba's most prolific painter of self-portraits.

Both Len and Zunzunegui, a poet and writer of short stories, belonged to a local art clique that met at the Malecn – an 8-kilometer-long esplanade, roadway, and seawall along the Havana coast. There, they would talk shop, have bonfires, and swim in the sea. Hampton said her mother described Len as a particularly excellent swimmer.

However, their days at the shore were abruptly ended when Len was awarded a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) arts scholarship through the assistance of friend and fellow artist Chilean Roberto Matta. Matta had five paintings sold during the Sotheby's auction. One piece, "Lispard du Mêdi," went for $566,500.

The scholarship took Len to Europe, where his career-establishing landscape oils of harbors and parks, like "Parque Central," were left behind for European-influenced abstracts featuring infusions of Picasso-perfected Cubism.

Still, that second – and more successful – half of his short, nine-year art career did not last long. Len was subject to a government-mandated recall from his scholarship after being identified as an anti-revolutionist. He did not survive the trip back to Cuba and died in 1964.

His story and Zunzunegui's tradition of discovering, exploring, and critiquing art has recently been embraced by Hampton, who as a young girl embarrassed by her mother's Spanish accent and taste in décor, said she would never have imagined such a change in attitude about her mother and her perspective on the art she maintained with fervor, knowing what it would be worth.

The story behind "Parque Central" and the anecdotes that it has yet to bring the family are priceless, according to Hampton.

Arab & Western Hypocrisy on Syria

The Arab League’s suspension of Syria amid increasing Western pressure, Egyptian junta’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, Bahrain’s excessive use of force against its own people, and Yemeni regime’s massacre of its citizens have once again underlined the prevailing double standards in the world.

According to official figures released by the "Bahrain Center for Human Rights" website, at least 44 Bahraini citizens were killed at the hands of mercenaries of Al Khalifa regime. The Bahraini martyrs include the 6-year-old Mohammed Farhan, 14-year-old Ali Jawad Alshaikh and 15-year-old Sayed Ahmad Saeed Shams.

The Bahraini organization has reported that many of these people were killed while in custody. The Center has also published documents indicating that more than 1,500 Bahrainis including about 100 women were incarcerated since the eruption of turmoil in the Persian Gulf country on February 14, 2011 and that more that 90 journalists face life threat.They take the China Porcelain tile to the local co-op market.

The only reaction of the international community to the brutality in this country has been an indecisive and faltering resolution by the UNSC which has called for "an end to violence" and asked President Ali Abdullah Saleh to accept a peace deal brokered by the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council.

Growing organs, cell at a time

Luke Masella was born with spina bifida, and after 10 years it was getting the best of him. The congenital disorder affects the development of the nerves and vertebrae along the spinal cord, and can result in paralysis, neurological complications and organ damage.

In Masella's case, his bladder was failing and he spent much of his early childhood in the hospital. Masella was gravely ill and needed a new bladder. This was 2001, and conventional treatment would have been to use a portion of Masella's intestine to make a new bladder. Afton approves new law without a squawk

Afton could see more chickens in the community now that Afton City Council approved a new ordinance regulating chickens on smaller lots.

The ordinance, approved at the Nov. 15 council meeting, allows for chickens on parcels smaller than a half-acre.

“This looks like a really good ordinance,” Mayor Pat Snyder said.

City to allow backyard chickens after rewriting ordinance

Every day at sunrise seven chickens scurry out of a coop in Courtney Turnlund's backyard off McArdle Street.

There's Pumpkin, Scratch, Willow, Mila, Daisy, Chip and Dale. She's raising the urban hens for their fresh eggs.

"There's a richer color and a richer taste," she said. "Most people don't realize that the eggs you buy at the store are a few weeks old by the time they make it to the shelf."

On a recent afternoon, it was feeding time for Turnlund's suburban chickens. She bounded outside and began calling for them, making a series of soft clucking noises. A flock of hens assembled and followed her to a storage closet. She scooped feed and tossed it onto the grass. Her chickens also eat leftover food scraps and bugs.

"Nothing goes to waste around here," Turnlund said.

While the hens pecked and pushed for food, Turnlund's 5-year-old toy fox terrier Lilly watched the action.ceramic magic cube for the medical, Like Lilly, the chickens also have free range of the fenced backyard.

Last week, the City Council approved a first reading of an ordinance that allows residents to raise up to seven urban domestic chickens. Turnlund helped write the new code, which revised a long-standing violation to own or raise livestock in the city limits.

Residents also must have a chicken coop built to specified standards and maintain the chickens' health and sanitation. The ordinance requires one more reading by the council before it's official.

Turnlund and her husband, Jesse, moved here in 2009. Not long after, they began caring for two blond chicks, a gift from a friend moving away. Turnlund named the Rhode Island Red breed Pumpkin and the Ameraucana was dubbed Scratch.

Then came a heartbreaking discovery: Raising chickens was a violation of city ordinance.

Lamar inmate center nearly complete

A plan aimed at reducing the Lamar County main jailhouse's population while increasing the pool of less expensive labor for county use is set to bloom in December.

County officials are awaiting the delivery of fences that will enclose the recently-completed Lamar County Inmate Work Center in downtown Purvis. Once the fences are erected, about 30 male, low-risk prisoners will be transferred from the county's Law Enforcement Complex to the 56-bed center.

"I'll have all 56 beds filled after the first of the year," Sheriff Danny Rigel said. "I think we have about 30 (inmates) in place right now, ready to go when we move.

"We're probably looking at about three weeks because we're waiting on the rest of the fencing right now. We've got everything else in place."

County Administrator Chuck Bennett said two fences will ring the facility adjacent to Mulberry Street - about 50 yards north of the main jail.

"Inside, there will be a courtyard fence with razor wire, and then outside, a fence that's much more decorative," Bennett said. "Both of those are close to being finished, probably in the next week or two."

The project began in late 2010, with the relocation of the county's family/children services department, which had called the building home. The conversion then began, creating a barracks-like facility with its own beds, bathroom/shower pod, visiting area and patdown and surveillance rooms.

When finished, the project is expected to cost about $250,000, including equipment,Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, supplies, bedding and other materials. Bennett said the county spent $127,166 in fiscal 2011 and had budgeted about another $88,000 in 2012.

"We've spent about $25,000 in 2012 so far," he explained.

Jaclyn Yates’s 16-month-old son Grayson was at home with a babysitter Nov. 1 when he swallowed a small battery.
“The babysitter had said he’d had a tough time with him and he was crying a lot and he couldn’t settle him down,” she recalled.

After driving the sitter home and asking him more questions, Yates returned to the house and knew something was wrong.

“We went upstairs and woke him up. All around his head, his sheet was just soaked,” she said, adding her partner Rob Ritchie held the boy, who would gag anytime he moved a certain way.

The couple couldn’t figure out what was wrong, so they rushed Grayson to the emergency room at the Midland hospital.
Yates asked her older son what might have happened and why Grayson was so upset.

“I’d found the bottom rubber piece to a Nerf gun bullet,” she said. “It was soaked, so we just assumed if he was choking on anything it was the other end of that – the foam piece.”

At the hospital, Dr. Jeff Golisky examined Grayson and immediately ordered an X-ray.
“They could see there was something stuck in his throat,” said Yates, who was told her son was, in fact, choking on something.

“He was breathing because he was crying, but he couldn’t actually swallow anything,ceramic magic cube for the medical,” she said. “When we’d found him in his bed earlier, it was actually saliva (that had soaked his sheets).”

“He said when he went in, he was literally chasing it down toward the stomach, and as soon as he saw it was metal he started to panic,” Yates said, adding the doctor told them if the battery had been in there any longer, gone down on a different angle or moved lower, her son might not have survived.

Nearly a month later, Yates and Ritchie said they remain impressed with the quick response and care their son received that night.

“If anything had gone differently, he wouldn’t be here,” she said.

The couple has leaned a lesson from the frightening experience, and they hope sharing what they went through will let others know about the hazards of choking.

“Even if they’re breathing, even if they’re crying, there’s still a possibility there’s something in their throat. People immediately associate choking with (turning) blue and not breathing, but that’s not always the case,” she said. “Aside from us being his parents, there would have been no other way for anyone to know he had something in his throat. We know his personality and mannerisms and we knew that something was wrong.”
In the meantime, Grayson is back home and doing well.

“He’s still kind of getting over it. We’ve noticed since he’s come home he’s been really cuddly and wanting to stay really close. Other than that, he’s come back around and is always getting into trouble.”

I am a patriotic Nigerian and a bona fide citizen of Kogi State. I pay my taxes and perform all my civic duties. During the last election, I voted for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. I voted for him because he promised us a breath of fresh air. The fresh air we are receiving now is neither fresh nor healthy, it is suffocating. I have come to realize that there is a fundamental problem with our politicians, their policies and their aversion to upholding campaign promises.

If Lisa Hardegger had any qualms about having a third of her liver cut out to save the life of a child, she had only to look at 2-year-old Jaya. The daughter of her friends Jono and Bex Robinson was dying.

"That's the reality of it ... well, that's the way I see it. Then they don't really put further thought into it until something comes up. Organ Donation NZ says that more than 400 New Zealanders are waiting for an organ transplant, around 350 of these need kidneys.

Margaret Johnston, senior liver transplant co-ordinator at Auckland Hospital explains: "The motivation for live liver donors is to save the life of a loved one. Our policy here at the NZ Liver Transplant Unit is that the live liver donor must have an emotional attachment to the recipient. This is because it is such a huge operation with significant risks that we do not believe altruistic donation should be considered."

Andy Tookey knows what it feels like to see a loved one declining because of a failing organ. His daughter Katie was diagnosed with the same disorder as Jaya Robinson when she was only a few weeks old. He was told she'd need a liver transplant.

Desperate to help his daughter he started researching the possibilities of finding a donor and opened a "can of worms" that was to set him on the campaign path for changes to organ donation laws. First he discovered New Zealand's very low rate of donations and what he sees as numerous flaws in the current system that prevent organs from reaching people on waiting lists.

He says the "opt in" system where people register as donors on their driver's licences doesn't work. More than half of people tick "No" and even those who tick "Yes" can have their wishes overruled by their families.

Lack of education puts many people off.
