While the weather was wet and soggy outside, the Cold Springs High girls basketball team also made it rain inside the Vinemont gym Tuesday night, draining 13-of-35 3-point shots on the way to a convincing 84-30 win.
Haley Freeman had six of those long-distance shots — all before the half — and finished the night with 26 points to lead the way for Cold Springs.
“That was an awesome game she had tonight,” coach Tammy West said. “She can’t shoot the ball better than she did tonight.”
The sophomore made back-to-back 3s midway through the first quarter and wasn’t gun shy from long range the rest of her time on the floor. Freeman’s final trey put Cold Springs up 39-13 shortly before halftime.
“I felt pretty good,” she said. “My team helped me, though, passing the ball.”
Her fellow players weren’t just good at passing the ball Tuesday night, however, as four of Freeman’s teammates also pitched in from behind the arc. Abby Myrex, Ka Ka Crider and Hayden West all made two apiece, while Daultry Willoughby contributed one of her own.
From the game’s outset, it was clear Cold Springs was going to live or die off its ability to hit 3-point shots, and West said that’s exactly how she drew up the gameplan for her squad.
“That’s just what we try to do,” the coach said. “They all have the green light (to shoot 3-pointers).”
Freeman said it makes it easier to play knowing West is comfortable and confident with her player’s shot selections.
