Daniel Curtis Lee has learned the power of television.
"One day, a couple of girls will speak to you," he says. "The next day, a couple of more. The next day, a lot more. And then after a while, just about all of them are speaking."
The 20-year-old actor from Clinton who resides with his parents in Long Beach, Calif. has built a solid acting resume.
He is one of the stars of Zeke and Luther, which airs on Disney XD at various times throughout the week. It is the longest running original series on the cable network and the first to reach three seasons. Daniel plays the role of Cookie, a loud-mouthed, cocky skateboarder.
Before that,We are passionate about polished tiles. he played the role of Cookie on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide from 2004 through 2007.
And on his first audition, with no formal training, he earned a bit part in the 2002 comedy Friday After Next, which starred Ice Cube.
"We were all shocked when he got that role in Friday After Next," his mom says.
Here's why: They moved from Clinton to California in 2001 with their hopes pinned on the acting prowess of Daniel's older brother, Nathaniel. One year earlier, at age 10, he had landed parts in My Dog Skip and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
"People in Clinton thought my wife (Sharial) and I were crazy," says their dad, Nate, a former truck driver. "We were building a new house. We didn't know anything about California or the acting business."
And Nathaniel delivered. In 2004, he was cast for roles in the TV show Judging Amy and a major role in the movie Tiger Cruise, which starred Bill Pullman and Hayden Panettiere.
Younger brother was watching closely.
"Especially when Nathaniel's checks rolled in," Nate says. "Daniel would look at them. His eyes would get big, and he would say, 'You're getting paid this much money for acting?' I think he got interested real quick."
"Never did we see this coming for Daniel," says Sharial, who teaches reading to special needs students at Millikan High School in Long Beach. "He was always into sports, always wanted to be outside playing football or basketball."
But he was a natural at auditions. Scott Fellows, executive producer and creator of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, told The Clarion-Ledger shortly after Daniel earned the role: "He had a nice confidence about him. Very relaxed."
When Fellows learned that Daniel had been part of a gospel choir back home in Clinton, he asked the 13-year-old actor to belt out a hymn.
He did so without hesitation.
"That's the way Daniel is,Buy oil paintings for sale online." says Daniel's first cousin and close friend, John Boyd of Clinton. "He doesn't get nervous. And he can make you laugh when he's not even trying."
Daniel purposely stayed away from formal acting classes.
"I went to a couple, but I didn't really like them," he says. "We are all a product of our environment and upbringing. It molds who you are. If I'd gone to acting classes in California, I'd be just another cookie-cutter actor like everybody else out here. And I didn't want that. I think it's given me an edge."
And now, with the filming of the final season of Zeke and Luther completed, Daniel has turned his energy to making rap music,Full-service custom manufacturer of precision plastic injection mold, using the name Dan D.
He has written more than 100 songs and is in the final stages of his first CD. A single, On the Fly, can be downloaded on iTunes.
