The Rutherford Commission's Redistricting Committee responded Wednesday to the concerns of road and school board members by voting to leave their boundaries alone.
"My constituents are mad," Road Board Chairman Randal "Bubba" Jones told the committee. "You are not representing my district. My people are upset."
Last week, the committee recommended using more compact and contiguous maps for school and road board zones proposed by County Commissioner Robert Stevens. But the result meant that some current road and school board members would be drawn out of their current seats or face each other for their posts.
On Wednesday, the committee adhered to County Commissioner and committee member Doug Shafer's call to rescind his motion from the previous week. Committee members, however,Bathroom Floor tiles at Great Prices from Topps Tiles. also suggested that the 21-member County Commission consider appointing a new committee to study a future way the county can improve the non-compact school and road board zones.
The County Commission will consider the recommendation when it meets at 6 tonight at the County Courthouse.
County commissioners in September approved their own district boundaries. Each district had to be within 5 percent of 12,Information on useful yeasts and moulds,505 residents based on dividing the 2010 U.S. Census population count of 262,604 for the county by 21 commission seats. The county faced a deadline of Jan. 1, 2012, to get the plan submitted to the state, which has final authority to ratify the changes.
Each of the county road and school board zones is made up of three commission districts.
The map proposed by Stevens would have placed Jones and fellow Road Board member Michael Anderson in the same zone.
"We want to see each district represented in a fair and just way," Anderson said.
The proposal would have placed school board Chairman Mark Byrnes in the same zone as Vice Chairman Terry Hodge during an election year when both would hire the next district director and make decisions about future budget plans for the system.
"We are affecting people who are in seats," said Byrnes, adding that it troubled him to protect one set of incumbents who serve on the commission but not another set who serve on the school and road board. "I urge you to reject this plan."
Stevens after the meeting said the election cycle issue could have easily been resolved.
"It became apparent that protecting incumbents was the main goal," said Stevens, who resides in Smyrna and is not on the redistricting committee. "I just didn't see any way of getting the majority of the committee to support the plan. I am going to support the majority's decision. But hopefully we can look at this issue again in the near future and get a resolution to the issues at a later time."
Stevens said he offered an alternative map after hearing concerns from La Vergne residents who said they wanted to have one main school board member who represented them instead of having their city split between three different board members.
La Vergne resident Mike Catanese joined others from his city hoping to see a new map for the school board zones that would provide fair representation and keep communities of interest together.
"I hope they will look at it again after the first of the year," said Catanese, who attended each of the redistricting committee meetings the past three weeks.
Election Administrator Nicole Lester, who is the vice chairwoman of the redistricting committee, reminded everyone at the meeting that the county government can pursue changing boundaries for the school and road board zones at any time.
"I don't think there's a perfect solution,Dimensional Mailing magic cube for Promotional Advertising," said Lester, who presided over the meeting because Commissioner Steve Sandlin, the committee chairman, had to go to the hospital with a kidney stones problem.
Commissioner Doug Shafer of La Vergne suggested that a future committee to re-examine school and road board seats consist of residents who are not elected and appointed officials.
