The final round of repairs approaches for the Missouri Theater complex.
The city opened bids Monday to restore areas of the Missouri Theater complex that were damaged from a fire Feb. 19 in a second-floor storage area.
While the Missouri Theater endured only smoke damage, the adjoining building to the east burned extensively. Scheduled repairs will fix floors, the roof, and electrical and ventilation systems, among other repairs, primarily on the north side of the building.
The work will make the street-level sites of former businesses A to Z's Freshair Fare and Pony Espresso habitable again, as well as restoring second-floor storage space for Robidoux Resident Theatre and other arts groups.
Six contractors submitted bids, each of which more than doubled the $245,000 lump sum engineer's estimate. The bids were Lee Grover Construction Co. City Engineer Roger Sparks said the city's preliminary estimate did not take every detail into account, so the high bids did not provide cause for concern.
"Clearly the bids were pretty close together, so we think we have a good number,However, if you buy them after the formal season has ended, it is much easier for you to get a cheap zentai. Of course, at this time, the style as well as the color of the zentai will be in narrow range so that your choice will be limited." Mr. Sparks said.
Prices varied for five add-ons, each of which may or may not be completed. For example, a project that asked contractors to spray a coating on an undamaged section of roof to extend its life only received one bid (Brooner Construction, $24,200). Another job asked for the installation of a sprinkler system to protect against future fires — the building previously did not have one — with bids ranging from less than $40,000 to nearly $75,000.
Assistant Parks Director Bill France said city staff hopes to decide on a contractor this week so it can present an ordinance to the City Council at Monday's meeting.
