Solar cell maker needs workers for new Portland plant

SoloPower, a California-based maker of thin solar panels, announced Tuesday they are looking to hire people to work in their new Portland manufacturing facility.

The SoloPower manufacturing plant, a 225,000 square-foot former distribution warehouse located on North Marine Drive, should employ about 90 people by the end of the year, according to CEO Tim Harris. Eventually, the company hopes to employ about 450 people.

Prospective employees can apply for work with the company at the Interstate Career Expo on Wednesday, March 7, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pre-registration for the expo is required.

SoloPower will be “looking for equipment engineers, chemical engineers, production and process engineers and front-end and maintenance technicians,” Thomas Barker, Director of Human Resources, said in a press release. “We’re proud to help Oregon continue on the path towards establishing a broad clean technology manufacturing base and a stronger state economy.”

He said current solar panel designs are too heavy for large-scale installation on the rooftops of some large buildings.

Harris, who has been with SoloPower for two years as CEO, comes from a tech background and compared the emerging solar power industry to the evolution of another tech mainstay: computer hard drives.

But pictures that were too blatantly overestimated ran into difficulties.

The most spectacular illustration of the untoward effect of overestimation was provided by the would-be star picture that adorned the catalog cover.

U.S. solar companies urge SolarWorld drop China case

A coalition that says it represents 97 percent of the U.S. solar industry urged solar panel maker SolarWorld on Thursday to withdraw a petition asking President Barack Obama's administration to slap punitive duties on China for unfair trading practices.

"The severe tariffs SolarWorld seeks would have a very damaging effect on the solar industry in the United States and would fundamentally undermine many years of effort by all of us who care about the future of solar power," the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy (CASE) said in a letter to SolarWorld President Gordon Brinser.

"In simple dollar terms, your petition threatens the planned installation of solar electric power systems in the amount of $11 billion in 2012 and the potential installation of $60 billion currently in the total pipeline," the group said in the letter signed by CASE President Jigar Shah.

Shah, who founded the solar services company SunEdison, argued that a 40 percent drop in solar panel prices between 2006 and 2011 has helped spur an eight-fold increase in demand for solar energy over the same period.

"By asking government to interfere and artificially increase the price (equivalent to putting on a high tax) will only hinder the deployment, cost thousands of jobs, reduce our energy security and further negatively impact an already shaky economy," Shah said in the letter.

Brinser, in an emailed statement, dismissed the letter "as inappropriate bluster from Jigar Shah, who speaks on behalf of the Chinese manufacturers. Mr. Shah and these Chinese manufactures are well aware that their illegal trade practices are harming the U.S. economy and causing thousands of good manufacturing jobs to be lost."

Brinser said his coalition was supported by more than 150 associate members from 14 states employing over 11,000 workers.

The U.S. International Trade Commission voted 6-0 this month to allow the case to proceed and for the Commerce Department to announce preliminary duties early next year.

It would be extraordinary for SolarWorld to withdraw its petition having cleared that early hurdle.

But CASE, which includes many companies that install solar panels and have benefited from a 40-percent drop in prices over the past five years,The Transaction Group offers the best high risk merchant account services, argued it would be in the best interest of the overall U.S. solar industry for SolarWorld to do that.

Redistricting committee reverts to previous map

The Rutherford Commission's Redistricting Committee responded Wednesday to the concerns of road and school board members by voting to leave their boundaries alone.

"My constituents are mad," Road Board Chairman Randal "Bubba" Jones told the committee. "You are not representing my district. My people are upset."

Last week, the committee recommended using more compact and contiguous maps for school and road board zones proposed by County Commissioner Robert Stevens. But the result meant that some current road and school board members would be drawn out of their current seats or face each other for their posts.

On Wednesday, the committee adhered to County Commissioner and committee member Doug Shafer's call to rescind his motion from the previous week. The County Commission will consider the recommendation when it meets at 6 tonight at the County Courthouse.

County commissioners in September approved their own district boundaries. The proposal would have placed school board Chairman Mark Byrnes in the same zone as Vice Chairman Terry Hodge during an election year when both would hire the next district director and make decisions about future budget plans for the system.

"We are affecting people who are in seats," said Byrnes, adding that it troubled him to protect one set of incumbents who serve on the commission but not another set who serve on the school and road board. "I urge you to reject this plan."

Stevens after the meeting said the election cycle issue could have easily been resolved.

"It became apparent that protecting incumbents was the main goal," said Stevens, who resides in Smyrna and is not on the redistricting committee. "I just didn't see any way of getting the majority of the committee to support the plan. I am going to support the majority's decision. But hopefully we can look at this issue again in the near future and get a resolution to the issues at a later time."

Stevens said he offered an alternative map after hearing concerns from La Vergne residents who said they wanted to have one main school board member who represented them instead of having their city split between three different board members.

La Vergne resident Mike Catanese joined others from his city hoping to see a new map for the school board zones that would provide fair representation and keep communities of interest together.

"I hope they will look at it again after the first of the year," said Catanese, who attended each of the redistricting committee meetings the past three weeks.

Election Administrator Nicole Lester, who is the vice chairwoman of the redistricting committee, reminded everyone at the meeting that the county government can pursue changing boundaries for the school and road board zones at any time.

Biologists use helicopter to collar wild bighorns

Wild sheep biologist Frances Cassirer was given her choice between a seemingly healthy bighorn ram and one that was coughing and sneezing.

She directed a capture crew to go after the healthy one.

More than 16 years after pneumonia wiped out half of the bighorn sheep in the northern portion of Hells Canyon, the illness refuses to loosen its grip on the iconic animals. The all-age die-offs that raced through the herds in the winter of 1995 and spring 1996 are long gone, but the illness continues to pick off lambs and the occasional adult.

On Nov. 28 and Nov. 29, wildlife officials from Idaho, Oregon and Washington and a helicopter crew from Leading Edge Aviation captured several bighorns and fitted them with radio collars that track their movements. They also took biological samples from the sheep and assessed their condition. It's all part of the ongoing effort to recover wild sheep in Hells Canyon.

"Nobody else has been studying sheep this intensively this long," Cassirer said.

They've learned more about the disease and just how persistent it can be. Biologists expected to see poor lamb survival and the occasional death of mature animals for as long as a decade following the first outbreak. The poor survival prediction was correct but lamb mortality hasn't shown any signs of dissipating. For some herds, the annual pneumonia death rate is higher today than it was during the years immediately following the die-off.

That is true of the Black Butte herd that lives near the mouth of the Grand Ronde River at the northern end of Hells Canyon. The capture crew from Leading Edge netted the healthy ram from that herd Tuesday and fitted it with a high-tech radio collar that will allow them to follow its movements.

Earlier in the day sheep were captured and collared from a heard in the Shumaker Ridge area of Washington and near Cache Creek on the Oregon side of Hells Canyon. Cassirer and others are trying to find the keys to prevent bighorns from contracting the disease from domestic sheep and looking for ways to help infected herds to shake loose from its grips. In many years nearly all the lambs in certain herds die. But other years have normal survival rates.

There are always new questions. This year some sheep have been infected with cold-sore-like lip lesions.

She said it doesn't appear to be deadly to adults but it could be playing a role in poor lamb survival. The research performed this week is being supported by the Oregon and Washington chapters of the Wild Sheep Foundation, the Oregon Hunters Association, Nevada Bighorns Unlimited and Shikar-Safari Club International.

Now she is able to go to the pool at Duke University, swim and get out––and her hair dries straight.

Middle-school teacher Melissa Albrand has had a Brazilian Blowout three times, she said.

When Mehta had her Brazilian Blowout, she didn’t find any of the vapors irritating, she said.

As a result of the accusations about the formaldehyde, the Brazilian Blowout Company has created a solution that they say contains no formaldehyde at all called the Brazilian Blowout Zero.

However, the treatment done by the Zero solution doesn’t last as long.

And though the company promises no formaldehyde in this new product, Buchanan isn’t ready to use it.

“I want to know the product that I’m using before I use it on my clients,” she said.

Children fall ill at ice facility; carbon monoxide suspected
