The Canadians held out for 17 days with no reinforcements and dwindling food supplies before they finally laid down their weapons. After spending several days burying their dead, Mr. MacDonell said, he and the remaining survivors were rounded up and taken to work camps.

The soldiers survived on meager diets of barley and chrysanthemum tops and were housed in plywood structures that resembled chicken coops. Many contracted diphtheria, beriberi and other diseases, and they were rarely offered medical treatment for their ailments. “It was as terrible as you can imagine,” Mr. MacDonell said.

Due to the fact that the natural resources of Palos Heights are such a strong and stunning part of the city the main focus has been treasures of Palos Heights in the four seasons, hence the title. The mural is divided into a grid of eight vertical sections of three-fourth inch Extira board, each section measuring 3 feet wide by 6 feet tall, totaling 24 feet wide. This enabled the mural to be completed in sections — four on one side, four on the other — in my Chicago studio.

My husband, Geoffrey Novelli, and I put in long hours on the mural. Geoff is a sculptor and has a lot of amazing tools — and patience! He did all of the cutting, I did the design and painting on both the boards and the intricate ceramic tiles.

A very large oak tree, like several that are around the gazebo in the park across from City Hall, is the main subject that most of all of the other images relate to. It extends across all of the upper panels like protective arms. The far left panel represents winter, the one next to it spring, the 2nd from the right summer, the far right, fall. Nationwide Promotes Bazemore to New Vice President of Furniture

Columbus schools chief announces levy in works; but board has final say

Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene Harris is moving ahead with plans to put a tax increase on the ballot next year, but she stressed that the Board of Education would make the final call.

No such discussions have yet taken place, said board Vice President Ramona Reyes. The board will weigh any recommendations against other factors, such as the struggling economy and likelihood of voter approval before making any moves, Reyes said.

“November of ’12 would be my guess,” said board member Mike Wiles, adding that the time to go back on the ballot has been kicked around informally since he joined the board almost two years ago. “So I guess we’re on track to do that.”
