Homeowners furious over solar panels rip-off after company goes out of business

Furious homeowners fear they have lost hundreds of pounds to a solar energy company that has gone out of business.

Money Mail has received dozens of emails and letters from angry readers who paid 500 each to Energy Saving Group to have solar panels fitted. All complain they have received neither panels nor cash refunds.

Customers say ESG had promised to slash their fuel bills if they had the solar panels installed.

They were told their homes would benefit from the solar energy generated, while the firm would pocket a government subsidy, called the feed-in tariff, which is paid for extra energy generated and sold back to the grid. This promised payments of 43.3p per kWh of energy generated and sold back. Last month, the tariff was slashed to 21p.

This type of offer is not unusual — and is commonly known as a ‘rent-a-roof’ scheme.

But fears are growing that thousands of homeowners across Britain may have lost hundreds of pounds after being enticed by solar panel salesmen.

Money Mail has come across dozens of cases where ESG customers have had to wait for months for panels to be fitted after making payments. In a letter sent in August, many who had requested refunds were told ESG was unable to pay back money to its thousands of customers all at once, but that they would be contacted when it was their turn.

However, customers say emails and telephone calls to the address ESG uses in Redditch, Worcs, have gone unanswered. Some who contacted ESG in December have received letters telling them the firm has now gone out of business.

And Money Mail can reveal two of the directors of Energy Saving Improvements Limited,Daneplast Limited UK are plastic injection mould & toolmaking specialists. which trades as Energy Saving Group, are running another energy sales company called Energy Reduction Surveying Limited.

They are Steven Dickson, 33, who gives his address for both companies as Bromsgrove, Worcs; and James Manley, 34, from Hockley, Solihull. According to files lodged at Companies House, Energy Reduction Surveying Limited is registered at the Business Centre in Edward Street, Redditch.

The company trades under the name Energy Reduction UK. ESG is registered in Billesley, Birmingham.

When Money Mail called Energy Reduction UK, it said it was taking orders for solar panels, which it would install free or for 199.

Many of the people who have lost money with ESG are pensioners on limited incomes who were persuaded to order the panels by door-to-door salesmen.The Transaction Group offers the best high risk merchant account services, Others followed up adverts in local newspapers. Consumer groups have warned of vulnerable people being scammed by promises that solar energy could save them hundreds of pounds. Campaign group Consumer Focus warns that people who want to fit solar panels should order them only from companies registered under the REAL Assurance Scheme.

They should also only sign a contract certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme .

Always make sure you get at least three quotes from different companies before signing a contract.

Money Mail received separate statements from Mr Manley and Mr Dickson.

Mr Manley says he set up Energy Reduction UK alone — although Mr Dickson is listed as a director — because he did not agree with the way that ESG’s customers were being treated by third-party installers.

‘He says he cannot comment on any issues relating to ESG.

Mr Dickson says ESG stopped trading in December. However, records at Companies House show its status as ‘still active’.

He says its liquidators will do everything possible to recover this debt in order to repay Energy Saving Group’s creditors, which includes customers who are owed refunds.

World Famous V.I.P. Records To Close

It's a smoggy afternoon in Long Beach. The shop is open, but it's empty, which is par for the course lately. That's why after 33 years in business, owner Kelvin Anderson was scheduled to close V.I.P.'s doors for good this past weekend.

Taking calls behind the register on his Bluetooth, the 57-year-old Anderson wears a polo shirt, frameless glasses and a neatly trimmed goatee. He hardly looks ready to retire, yet there's resignation in his voice. "I waited way too long to try to reinvent us," he says.

V.I.P. Records hasn't turned a profit since 2003 — the year iTunes launched — and began accruing debt about five years later. Anderson says he and his son, Kelvin Jr., with whom he runs the store, can no longer afford to pay their rent and utility bills.

V.I.P. has undergone several downsizings in the past decade. The store's original entrance on PCH now leads into a vacant storefront next door, and the wall that divides the two spaces is crowded with sunglasses, hats, jewelry, incense burners — anything to help counter dismal CD sales.

Record stores have been shuttering all over the country, but the fall of V.I.P. is particularly dispiriting. After all,We are passionate about polished tiles. "World Famous" isn't an affectation; V.I.P. is iconic in the annals of West Coast gangsta rap. It housed the studio where Snoop Dogg,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, Warren G and Nate Dogg — then a trio known as 213 — recorded the demo that led to their big breaks. Taking a seat on the in-store performance stage — which has been graced over the years by artists such as Nate Dogg and LL Cool J — Anderson discusses the establishment's 1990s heyday, during which it hosted standing-room-only record signings and concerts.

The store also has played a key role in breaking urban artists, even those who never stepped through its doors. It once served as a tastemaker for the neighborhood and even for Los Angeles as a whole.

At one point, the V.I.P. name was attached to a dozen outposts in Southern California. The chain's original location in South Central was founded by Anderson's older brother Cletus in the late 1960s; it specialized in gospel, Motown and R&B.

After graduating from high school in Brandon, Miss., in 1972, a teenage Anderson followed Cletus to Los Angeles and got into the business. Together they opened V.I.P.'s Long Beach location — their 12th — in 1978; Anderson bought it shortly thereafter.

"Some kids go to college, but I got my degree in the music industry working at V.I.P.," he says.

In the '70s and '80s V.I.P. distributed albums and housed two labels, Magic Disc Records and Saturn Records, the latter of which put out Ice-T's 1982 debut single, "The Coldest Rap."

By the next decade, V.I.P. was an urban-music powerhouse. Eugene Luckett, a former retail marketing and distribution executive for Polygram, BMG and Capitol, has worked with Anderson for 15 years and describes him as instrumental to the success of artists he handled, including Warren G, Notorious B.I.G., TLC and Whitney Houston.

"In the '90s all the labels wanted the next West Coast gangsta rapper," Luckett says. "Kelvin was a portal for executives who didn't know anything about those artists."

Label reps like him relied on Anderson to tell them who was hot and how to market new albums to urban communities like Long Beach. After all, Anderson always seemed to understand what those audiences wanted to hear.

"He could get 1,000 people to show up to an in-store with minimal advertising," Luckett says. "That truly speaks to his bond with the community."

By the early '90s, West Coast hip-hop was taking over, and the kids visiting the store wanted in. Anderson enlisted the help of L.A. producer Sir Jinx to build an in-store recording studio, in part to bolster what he calls V.I.P.'s role as a "safe haven" for young people in the community.

Fresh off the success of Ice Cube's first two solo records, Jinx brought Anderson to his cousin Dr. Dre's house and showed him an SP1200 drum machine. "That was all you needed to make a hip-hop record in those days," Anderson recalls.

With Jinx's help, he soon transformed the store's back storage room into a veritable musical playground for the local kids.

Snoop and 213 recorded a demo there — "[V.I.P.] gave us life," Snoop recently told Current TV — and Anderson was struck by their sound. "They were something totally unique," he says. "You had Snoop's smooth delivery, which you could enjoy even without music to back it up, and you had , who was incorporating hooks right into the raps. That was brand new."

Paint Competition Expands its Portfolio

A new palette of events colors the 13th annual Plein Air Painting Invitational, a competition among artists who paint on location, expanded to offer an array of activities that begin this Sunday, Oct. 8, in Heisler Park.

Unlike in previous years, when festival painters first unpacked their easels along the Montage resort grounds, this year’s event will start with 44 artists that congregate in Heisler Park for the traditional “Quick Draw.” Results of the popular two-hour paint fest will be displayed at the Laguna Art Museum afterward, where the public can meet the artists,I have never solved a Rubik's Piles . buy works and enjoy refreshments. Works will stay hung all week. Last year buyers chose from 322 small paintings.

Since it’s in my own back yard, it’s simple; no stuff to lug cross country,” he said. “The best part is seeing old friends. It’s like a homecoming and that’s the cake. The event, whatever form it takes, is icing.”

Paint outs are not only open to professional plein-air painters invited from across the nation but also students of the Laguna College of Art and Design and Laguna’s public schools. College students will have their own Heisler quickdraw on Wednesday and a contest that will net the winner a $500 scholarship. The kids’ painting session will be led by artists Rick Delanty, Greg La Rock and Jeff Sewell on Monday. The kids will host a cupcake reception afterward and walk off with roughly $70 worth of art supplies, said Rosemary Swim, executive director of the Laguna Plein-Air Painters Association, and co-sponsor of the invitational with the Laguna Art Museum.

On Thursday, galleries featuring plein-air art will stay open until 7 p.m. (DeRu’s, Hotel Laguna Lobby Gallery and Pacific Edge).

The week will culminate with the Collector’s Soirée where guests can bid on their favorite artist’s output for that week. Tickets cost $125 for museum members and 150 for non-members, but this year $125 can be applied toward the purchase of a painting, said Vail.

Sifteo a fun but pricey new way to play

This new form of entertainment is called Sifteo Cubes. These blocks, about the size and shape of a small jewelry box, exist in that rare but intriguing realm between digital video games and hands-on-toys, an experience that's both on-screen and tactile.

They appear aimed mainly at kids, but they're also fun for adults like me. But at $149, it's a pricey proposition even for such a promising diversion.

In many ways, the cubes are a 21st century update to ages-old tabletop games such as chess, mahjong or playing cards. You play alone or with friends, using all three cubes at once, more if needed or desired. You can also play in Owlbear mode - you chase and try to eat the penguins. Though I'm well over 7 years old, I found this mode a bit tough at first.

"Moon Marble," in which age 7 and up strikes again. But this time I'm not overwhelmed by the challenge. I play the moon and tilt the blocks around to catch floating stars and eat them (hey, no one said games have to be scientifically accurate). I also need to avoid a tiny space-rat that wants to eat me.

"Mount Brainiac," ages 7 to 11, is a learning game. Technically I am out of this league but who's counting? Like with the others, I tried playing this game without reading the directions. Fail. Suddenly three words were staring at me from my cubes: "even,""will" and "gold." Wait, what? Turns out it wasn't a full sentence I needed to form, instead I had to arrange the words in alphabetical order.

"Gopher's Run" is also for 7-plus-year-olds. Similar to "Booker the Penguin," it's a simple maze game in which you join your cubes together to let a little gopher run around and find radishes to munch on. The cubes show part of a maze as you connect them, but because you only have three, you don't see the whole maze at once.

"Chroma Shuffle" is a catchy puzzle game that starts out with a grid of colorful dots filling each cube. Your task: make the dots disappear. To do this, find two cubes that have dots in the same color, then connect those dots. You only win if all the dots are gone. If there's a lone blue one left on one cube and only green and red on the others, you can't win. When this happens, you flip your cubes over, watch them fill with dots once again, and continue. Eventually you can run out of flips.

As with most puzzle games, the levels in "Chroma Shuffle" get increasingly complex as the game progresses. It can go on forever, depending on your skill level. It's my favorite.

Slightly different, Sifteo's "Creativity Kit" lets players make their own sorting games, involving words, letters or numbers. This feature is especially useful for parents (or teachers) who want to create puzzles for kids. One suggestion Sifteo gives: Put the letter symbols for chemical elements on the blocks, then have kids organize them by atomic weight.

Though the games are fun, I am not sure yet if they cross that crucial line between a diversion and a toy with true staying power. I had a co-worker try it out with his 4-year-old daughter, as there are games for the under 7 set as well. To succeed, Sifteo will need more games, good games at that, and perhaps a lower price.

Summer fete in Weymouth to raise funds for dog rescue centre

DOG rescuers are looking forward to a bumper fundraising day today as they continue their bid to build a rescue centre.

Rushton Dog Rescue currently looks after over 20 dogs that have been rescued in the Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester area through a team of fosterers who keep the animals at their homes.

The group is working towards gaining charity status and trying to find a piece of land where originator Cindi McNeil-Regan can realise her dream of building a rescue centre where the animals can be kept.

Today she and her fellow volunteers are hosting their free summer fete and dog shows with more than 30 stalls and attractions arranged for visitors to enjoy at the Marsh playing fields in Weymouth.

The event runs from 10am to 4pm and includes a brass band – not the Salvation Army as previously advertised – belly dancers, a bouncy castle and stalls.

Cindi is grateful for the help of her dedicated team of 20 volunteers helping with the event.

In the past the dogs she and her helpers have rescued include one which was caged for nine hours each day with their owners out at work.

She started rescuing in memory of her ‘soul mate' Timothy Rushton after he died aged 27 and they never got the chance to fulfil adream of setting up a rescue centre.

Cindi added: "I want to set up the centre as a benefit to the community.

"We have lots of people saying they want to help at our centre cleaning kennels and walking dogs and I have to tell them we haven't got a centre.

"But the amount of support we have been given is unbelievable.

Cindi also gives talks at schools about dog welfare and hopes to provide work experience to schoolchildren if she can open her own centre.

Cindi said the reason she is so busy with rescues is the amount of dog breeding and people having dogs they can not look after.
