Local Artist Earns International Praise

A computer engineer-turned-artist who moved to Rydal from the South American country of Colombia has been featured in an eight-page spread in a popular art magazine for her stunning still-life oil paintings.

Teresa Ramsey formerly worked in a corporate office in Colombia's capital, Bogota. She had a successful career as a computer engineer but felt empty because of the long hours. She often wondered what was missing in her life.

Fifteen years ago, Ramsey found her calling.

“With God’s help I found that I had an internal desire to pursue painting every spare moment I had, and I found enjoyment and relaxation in the art of painting in oils,” she said. The relaxation and enjoyment in her work drove Ramsey to become the best artist she could.

Buoyed by the support of her family and her indomitable will, Ramsey found recognition. In fall 2010, Ramsey earned an honorable mention in the oil/acrylic category at the North Cobb Arts League's competition in Kennesaw.

Local exposure has its own rewards, but Ramsey's talents were also highlighted on a much larger stage.

International Artist Magazine, a bimonthly publication that has been voted the world's best, first honored Ramsey in 2008. Her still-life painting Something to Celebrate earned her a finalist's spot in an international online competition hosted by the magazine.

Vincent Miller, the magazine's publisher, was so taken by Ramsey's work that he contacted her last year to begin writing a feature story on her process and style of painting. The result of this collaboration is an article called “Painting Larger Than Life,” which documents how Ramsey goes about creating her artwork and some finished pieces.

Despite the accolades she has earned for her art, Ramsey prefers to stay humble, thanking her husband and her son, Matthew. She is especially thankful for her mother, Licha, who died two years ago.

Ramsey is eternally thankful to the force that first got her interested in painting.

All judgement aside, Honduran society is still divided into classes. Therefore, the use of a foreign tongue has its sociological aspects. As in Europe, where French was once the language of choice with the upper classes, so in Honduras, English once served a similar purpose; at least since the 19th Century and through a good part of the 20th. A flawless use of English was once the distinctive mark of the educated member of the Honduran gentry, and usually the result of having attended school abroad. In LatAm, this phenomenon is found exclusively in the Caribbean and Central America. South of Panama, where countries had stronger ties to Latin Europe, or where there existed an inherited degree of anglophobia, English was perceived more negatively and was rarely, if ever used among the local upper classes.
