Ascert Releases VersaTest Automator

Ascert announced today the general release of VersaTest Automator version 1.7. This release contains a number of new features many of which, as is customary, were demonstrated at Ascert's annual User Group held in November in London. Additionally, the release includes a new feature to give per-user persistence allowing the state and layout of the interface to be saved between uses. The user experience has been enhanced in other ways as well, in that panels and menus can now be customized based on user access levels. This allows a user’s experience of the product to be tailored depending on their operational role.

Also included in this release are enhancements to the documentation of test cases, allowing extra descriptive information to be included in a form readily understood by business analysts.

Overall, Flow's Web and app components work well together. If you're more visual, you may prefer Trello -- the interface resembles a bulletin board, so you can pin "cards" and shuffle them into lists and projects. It also has iOS and Android companion apps.

In fact I’m going to meet Giles Long MBE, retired British Paralympic swimmer, in a Dickensian, oak-panelled pub down the road. A fire blazes. Pearl Jam scream. Long is at the bar with a pint of Guinness. Simon Callow is nowhere to be seen.

Campground plan concerns neighbors

Many Otter Tail Lake residents are still strongly opposed to a proposed 70-acre campground in the area, and question why a public input period would be held in the middle of winter, when many lake residents aren’t around.

Homestead at Otter Tail has applied for a conditional use permit to establish 185 camping sites on agricultural property near the junction of Highways 5 and 78. An Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) on the development was recently forwarded to the State Environmental Quality Board, and a public comment period on the information will be between Feb. 18 and March 20.

Dan Arnold has a lake home directly across from the proposed campground, and is concerned that the project will bring as many as 740 people a day to the site, which is comparable to the population of Battle Lake. Since the site is not on the lake, it would place a heavy burden on the public lake access, located one mile up the road from the proposed site.

“They will be using the lure of Otter Tail Lake to bring these people to the lake but will have no access and not be adding any facilities to help accommodate these campers when the access to the lake is already not large enough,” said Arnold.

Arnold added that putting 740 people across the street from the lake with no access will likely result in trespassing across private property.

Other residents have expressed concerns about invasive species issues with launching and loading boats and personal watercraft, traffic going to and from the public landing, and increased traffic and safety along County Road 5 and 295th Street,wind turbine which are used by residents for walking, running and biking. Safety concerns along Highway 78 could pose a real problem.

Overall, concerns seem to be sending a message that the Homestead is not a compatible use with single family lakeshore residences, the highway location, and an adjacent working farm.

“We bought our current lake lot in 2007,” said Nermoe. “We checked on the nearby zoning before we purchased the property. It was zoned agriculture/single family. The Swanbergs knew the zoning on their property before they acquired it from their family. Why should it be changed now just because they want it?”

“It’s an emerging resource for any facility,” Kristy said. “We need to try and meet those needs.”

One goal has been just to let all patients know that language services staff are there to help them with anything. If patients don’t speak English, they can call the language services department directly, and someone there can get an interpreter on the line. Then they can work with the patient to set up appointments, get a question to a doctor and more.

Kristy said the Martti has been popular so that patients and medical professionals can work together alone. Otherwise some patients would bring in a friend or family member, which would take away patient privacy.

Good neighbours, industrious immigrants recalled amid remnants

An old fountain stands dry, the well-tended garden is gone and the Fuoco family doesn’t live at 640 Lorne anymore, but the modest house survives as a reminder of the city’s industrious and close-knit past.

Vaccine centre awaits certification from national bodies

Nearly 17 months after construction finished on the $140-million International Vaccine Centre, researchers have yet to do benchwork in one of its high-end labs.

InterVac, which will draw researchers from around the world to develop and test both human and animal vaccines, is the biggest facility of its kind constructed in Canada in the last two decades, says VIDO-InterVac CEO and director Andrew Potter.

Before anyone can begin handling infectious agents in the facility, it needs certification from both the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

"This is a big event and I think everybody on both sides wants to make sure we are doing this right," Potter said.

Joined by an overhead walkway to the existing Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) building on the University of Saskatchewan campus, the 145,000-square foot InterVac facility has six "containment Level 3" labs, which are equipped for the safe handling of organisms that transmit through the air and can cause life-threatening diseases. Experiments with tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis C, avian influenza, hantavirus and anthrax will one day take place in these labs.

The necessary precautions are tremendous. Associate director of operations and maintenance Cam Ewart scans his fingerprint while holding up a magnetic card bearing the same signature before the security system matches them and unlatches the door to the labs. In each lab, a continuous whoosh of air is audible as negative pressure continually replaces it, drawing in clean air from outside and sending old air to be filtered.

A researcher must pass through four doors to get into a lab - a clean room, a decontamination shower and a dirty room - and each one won't open until the one behind it latches. Any used material must be baked in a sterilizer before it leaves. To contain any potential contamination to one lab or room, every pipe must be perfectly sealed in place.

In another wing, 18 rooms for experiments on animals from mice to livestock have submarine-like, airtight doors. A gating system for corralling larger animals is bolted to walls and hangs from the ceiling inside some of the labs.

Once it is operating, Inter-Vac will be one of a handful of places in the world where development of both animal and human vaccines takes place.

Regulation of these types of facilities is strict, as the stakes for mishaps are high. In 2004, three workers at a Seattle infectious diseases lab were exposed to tuberculosis when a Madison aerosol chamber leaked.

"The danger to the public is non-existent, but the danger to the staff working over there is very real," Potter said.

Designed to keep ticking if any system fails, backup generators and extra fans will keep the air within each lab contained in the event of a breakdown.

When construction finished in fall 2011, Ewart was tasked with commissioning the building, meaning he pushed each system to its limit to see if it would trip. The testing took months.

"The ramifications of air stopping flow in this building are very significant,We have become one of the worlds most recognised Ventilation system brands." Ewart said.

Because the nature of the work requires strict security measures to stave off bioterrorist threats, staff must also be trained as first responders, Potter said.

In an email, CFIA spokes-man Rod Lister said that agency and the public health agency performed a certification inspection on InterVac in October 2012. University of Saskatchewan researchers waiting to use the facility aren't stalled, either - they're using other facilities such as the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg. What these officials clearly are anxious about, though, is the next possible pandemic.

Renaissance art makes a comeback

Last week, I asked whether, for roughly $12 million (￡8 million pounds), wealthy art buyers would prefer a rare, newly discovered painting by the 16th-century Mannerist painter, Bronzino, or a self-portrait by the contemporary graffiti artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. I can now say, at least, rule the Bronzino out.

The dark and moody portrait of a young writer had been accepted by art historians as a genuine early work, but was painted too much under the influence of his teacher,We have become one of the worlds most recognised Ventilation system brands. Another work from Pearl’s collection was a superb image of glamour and power, a bearded young man in richly decorated armour painted in 1574 by Scipione Pulzone. As the bidding rose above the $2.5 million estimate, the auctioneer carefully read out the equivalent price in roubles to a hesitant telephone bidder before knocking it down for a record $7.6 million. Nicholas Hall of Christie’s, who led the sale, says the Pulzone exemplifies how past images of power appeal to the new elite. Hall also said all the top lots at Christie’s were bought by buyers known to be active in other areas simply buying the best that is available, whatever the art historical category.

At Sotheby’s, Christopher Apostle confirmed that religious pictures were attracting demand again, that modern art collectors were active in the Old Master market, and that buyers were looking for strong images in very good condition. A stream of gold ground altar paintings, which the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was selling, all found buyers. These paintings were hard to sell 25 years ago, says Apostle, but now there is a deep pool of buyers.

Ticking all the boxes from the early Netherlandish school were a newly discovered painting from the 1480s of Christ lifting his hand in blessing by Hans Memling, which doubled estimates to fetch a record $4.1 million, and an icon-style head of the Virgin in prayer by Quinten Matsys that trebled estimates, selling to a Russian buyer for just over $1 million.

Russian buyers had a greater influence on results for more secular 18th-century paintings. At Christie’s they targeted a gentle interior by Chardin at a record $4 million, and views of Rome by Panini, while at Sotheby’s they spurred a new record $2.1 million for the rococo fantasies of Fran?ois Boucher.

As with religious paintings, there has also been a shift in taste in favour of 18th-century rococo and neo-classical painting, says Apostle. His top lot, for example, was a mythological painting of Susanna and the Elders, charged with colour and incident, by Pompeo Batoni, an artist better-known for his grand portraits of British tourists in 18th-century Rome. In 1991 the painting had been offered unsuccessfully at auction for ￡3 million and was bought subsequently by the Swiss investor Jacob Eli Safra.
