Mitt Romney and Lincoln Chafee have surprisingly similar family
backgrounds, both the product of prominent Republican households. Their
fathers governed states as Rockefeller Republicans—George Romney in
Michigan, John Chafee in Rhode Island—then served together in Richard
Nixon's cabinet. The sons followed their fathers' molds as moderate
Northeastern Republicans to great success a decade ago. Romney became
the governor of Massachusetts in 2002 and Chafee replaced his father in
the Senate, each serving one term in their respective roles.
From
there they split. Romney, of course, disavowed his moderate image to
run for president in 2008, sticking to his severely conservative mantra
up until the final month of this year's presidential campaign. Chafee,
on the other hand, disavowed his party after he lost his Senate seat to a
Democrat in 2006. He endorsed his former Senate colleague Barack Obama
during the 2008 Democratic primary and ran for governor of Rhode Island
in 2010 as an independent, winning a three-man race in which president
Obama declined to endorse the Democratic candidate.
Chafee is repaying Obama's favor on the 2012 campaign trail.A new Lamp shade

vice president," Chafee said. "If they really wanted to tack to the
middle they would have chosen Olympia Snowe, or somebody else to be the
VP. Governor Romney couldn't have gone more far right, Ryan is a foot
soldier for Dick Cheney and the agenda that got this country in such

A
press aide pulled Chafee away before I could get any further thoughts
on the extinction of the northeastern Republican. A crowd of 30 Obama
volunteers—a young, diverse group—crammed into the office's entry room
to listen to Chafee and Katherine Waddell, a former Virginia state
representative and fellow renounced Republican, boost the Obama cause.
"It was very cathartic to walk into my board of canvassers and
disaffiliate from being a Republican five years ago," Chafee told the
volunteers. "I'm an independent and proud to be here supporting my
colleague in the Senate—Senator Obama was in the Senate when I was, we
overlapped for two years and served on two committees. No surprise that
he was going places, even then. He's been a great president and he's
going to continue to be a great president." With that the crowd
dispersed. Chafee and Waddell headed into a back room for a brief
canvass training and then hit the road to go door knocking for Obama in
Henrico.

South Deerfield family retrofits home
Jennifer and Bill Marrapese wanted to find a modest house in a
family-oriented neighborhood, a fixer-upper with which they could do a
deep energy retrofit to improve energy conservation. They found their
ideal house in South Deerfield last spring,Chances are, you've never

They smelled something musty in the house when they walked in the door but the real estate agent suggested it was old pet urine on the carpet.
“We could tell there was a problem,” Jennifer Marrapese said. “Coming in there was a smell that made us suspect mold.”
Unfortunately they were right: There was mold in the 1977 ranch house they bought last April.
“From the beginning we were planning to have an energy efficient house but now we needed to make healthy and safe for us,” she said.
“We didn’t have a clue,” Marrapese said. “We didn’t realize what it would do with our timetable, what it would do with money. It was a huge shock.”
The couple discovered that the mold and water issues were so severe in the back sunroom area that the room had to be taken out. It had been constructed cheaply with a wood floor and crawl space, Jeffords said. The mold had crept all the way to the rafters in that area.
All the carpet was ripped out and the back sunroom was demolished. Once the house was up on jacks, Jeffords and his crew put down 4 inches of rigid foam insulation which also acts as a vapor barrier. Then they laid strings of radiant heat tubing which was embedded in a new concrete floor. The sunroom area also got a concrete slab with heating in the same manner.
“We ran out of money for wood floors,” Jennifer Marrapese said, so they turned the concrete into attractive flooring.
“We made four-by-four foot squares as we cut expansion joints into the slab,” Jeffords said. “We did it in a pattern in two different colors.”
The result: The floors look like huge tiles in beige and light brown.
“We like earth tones,” Marrapese said. One wall in the reconstructed sunroom, which now serves as living room and kitchen, is painted terra cotta.
The exterior of the house is sage green with an oxblood red front door.
All the exterior siding was removed for the deep energy retrofit. The skimpy insulation, which harbored mold, was removed and new insulation installed.
There are three inches of rigid foam plus five inches of densely packed cellulose in the walls.
“I love the deep windowsills,” Marrapese said. “It’s one of the aesthetics I like about the energy efficiency.”
Reusing the old siding would have been too labor-intensive, she said. Someday they may put on fancier siding but for the moment, the exterior is simply painted plywood. She said they may have to paint it more frequently than standard wood siding, but it is adequate.
“The house has phenomenal southern exposure, perfectly positioned for solar,” Marrapese said. There are three horizontal solar panels on the roof, on angled supports which can’t be seen from the street, plus three vertical panels on the back side of the house. “The verticals are optimally planned so they catch the winter sun,” she said.
The exterior solar panels fuel the 160-gallon water tank in the mechanical room to feed the radiant heat tubing as well as daily hot water needs. In case of snow or a long, cloudy period, there is a back-up, on-demand water heater that is electric-powered. The entire system was designed by StiebelEltron in Hatfield and installed by Donavin Gratz, also of Hatfield. A standard new house has an average rating of 100, net zero energy being 0. The Marrapese house is now judged to be 40 HERs.
The project was expensive, they agreed, but, luckily the couple say, they saved money by buying the house in foreclosure, below the market value. Kim's brought her light touch to oil painting
Today one often finds her working en plein air using a very different
medium – oils and watercolours – capturing the countryside around her
on canvas and board.
Yet the impact is just as striking. She has translated her bold and contemporary use of colour and line evident in her glass designs, to a new substrate, making her style very distinctive.
Thanks to her background in stained glass, she understands light, how it falls, impacts, reflects and changes. Add to that an eye for design, composition and ability to communicate visually and one has a winning combination.
Underpinning this love for colour is a joy for drawing, which Kim believes is the fundamental foundation for all the work she produces.
She is currently exhibiting alongside other artists who regularly attend Paul Fowler's Wednesday morning drawing skills class at Pegasus Art in Thrupp, in an exhibition appropriately named Passion for Drawing, which runs until October 26. It's part of the nationwide project the Big Draw, a campaign to encourage more people to pick up a pencil, pen or drawing tool of any kind and make a mark.
"Drawing is so important. It is one of those things you just have to keep on doing as a professional artist on a daily basis. The art of looking is essential to good design which is why I keep returning to life drawing.

A dark cloud looms in the background, emphasising the strong shafts of light which heighten the crevices on a rock face, a lone figure in the background or rich tapestry of colourful fields.
They are not chocolate box images, rather they have an honesty about them and reflect real life, which is often a mix of joy and sadness, light and dark.
In Kim's studio there are about six pieces of work on the go. A seascape from the Isles of Scilly – a popular haunt of Kim's as well as Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland – takes its place on her easel, while a waterfall at Merlin's Cave, waits to have its essential water added and maybe a figure hidden in the shadows.
She shows me some of her finished works which will be on view at Ludlow Castle in the Beckford Fine Art Exhibition from October 19 to 21 and at the Lavender Bakehouse, Chalford in November.

Born in Bristol, Kim worked for many years in top sales jobs before taking a year off to travel . An evening course with renowned stained glass artist Mark Angus at the Royal West of England Academy whetted her appetite and led her to the prestigious Swansea School where she gained a Diploma in Architectural Stained Glass.
She did a Masters Degree in the Conservation of Historic buildings at York University and took up residencies at The Victoria and Albert Museum and stained glass studios of the Cathedrals of York and Canterbury. It was in researching for her MA that she came to see Woodchester Mansion, fell in love with the building and the man behind its conservation project, Mike Hill and later moved to the Stroud Valleys, where she set up her stained glass studio. Until 2010 she specialised in new commissions as well as taking on conservation projects.
Kim's work can be seen in many churches as well as public and private buildings throughout the UK including Churchdown Library depicting an eye-catching modern design of book jackets and graphic symbols capturing the town's history; trefoils in a church in Birmingham paying tribute to its large Afro-Caribbean congregation; and her large east window in St. John the Evangelist at Purton showing Christ ablaze in light.
"As an architectural glass artist I always aim to design glass to add beauty to a place and pay respect to the use and users of the building. Light transmitted through coloured glass is ever-changing and can enhance mood and provoke contemplation in the viewer," explains Kim.
Yet the impact is just as striking. She has translated her bold and contemporary use of colour and line evident in her glass designs, to a new substrate, making her style very distinctive.
Thanks to her background in stained glass, she understands light, how it falls, impacts, reflects and changes. Add to that an eye for design, composition and ability to communicate visually and one has a winning combination.
Underpinning this love for colour is a joy for drawing, which Kim believes is the fundamental foundation for all the work she produces.
She is currently exhibiting alongside other artists who regularly attend Paul Fowler's Wednesday morning drawing skills class at Pegasus Art in Thrupp, in an exhibition appropriately named Passion for Drawing, which runs until October 26. It's part of the nationwide project the Big Draw, a campaign to encourage more people to pick up a pencil, pen or drawing tool of any kind and make a mark.
"Drawing is so important. It is one of those things you just have to keep on doing as a professional artist on a daily basis. The art of looking is essential to good design which is why I keep returning to life drawing.

Quinnipiac University opens Ireland's Great Hunger Museum
Quinnipiac University President John L. Lahey is proud to announce
the public opening of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum, Músaem an Ghorta
Mhóir, on Oct. 11. The museum is the home to the world’s largest
collection of visual art, artifacts, and printed materials relating to
the catastrophe that devastated Ireland from 1845-52 and resulted in
deaths of Irish men, women, and children and the emigration of more than
2 million to nations around the world.

The collection is filled with history and powerful stories about the Irish Famine and features nearly 100 original works by noted contemporary Irish and American artists in a variety of visual media, including sculptors John Behan, Rowan Gillespie, Glenna Goodacre, and Eamonn O’Doherty, and visual artists Robert Ballagh, Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Maguire, and Hughie O’Donoghue, as well as a number of important 19th and 20th century paintings by artists such as James Brenan, Daniel MacDonald, James Arthur O’Connor, Lilian Davidson,Totech Americas delivers a wide range of drycabinets for applications spanning electronics, and Jack B. Yeats. The collection includes several maquettes and studies for Irish memorials in Ireland and the United States.
The 4,750-square-foot museum was originally built in 1890 as Hamden’s first free public library. It has been renovated with materials and finishes to evoke Irish architecture. Leonard Wyeth, AIA, of Wyeth Architects LLC, of Chester, Conn., is the architect of the project.
Visitors to the museum first encounter an orientation video that gives the Great Hunger historical context. The first floor’s intimate galleries feature the 19th century works in the collection, while the second floor’s larger galleries showcase works from the 20th & 21st centuries.
Many artists did not depict the true horrors of the Great Hunger. Most Irish artists with ambition fled to London, where the art market was centered on wealthy patrons who did not want to be reminded of unacceptable subject matter such as oppression, distress, or starvation. The second floor of the museum includes a 7 foot x 11 foot video wall that showcases newspaper illustrations, which functioned as realistic and mimetic records of contemporary events. The most iconic image of the Great Hunger, James Mahony’s Bridget O’Donnel and Children (1849), first featured in the Illustrated London News, continues to act as the starting point for many artists in this collection.
Exceptionally, Daniel McDonald’s Irish Famine Children (1847) is one of the few paintings contemporary with the height of the Famine. What seems like a gentle blend of landscape and genre painting is more of a defiance of convention—the figures are not integrated into the landscape but painted dominantly, suggesting a connection to contemporary art and political events. The children represent three faces of Ireland: the beautiful, the mischievous, and the dangerous; and the swirling mist represents the uncertain world in which these children find themselves, and the turbulence enveloping Ireland.
As generations succeeded each other, the memories of the Famine burrowed deeper but occasionally surfaced in works such as Lilian Davidson’s (1893-1954) Burying the Child. Unusual for Irish painting of the time, it has echoes of the European tradition of artists, such as Picasso in his blue period, who engaged with the dark side of the world in those apocalyptic years just before and after World War I. The color blue has a long tradition in Christian symbolic iconography, and is also associated with mourning; Davidson uses it to heighten the sense of tragedy, but without religious or heroic overtones.

The evidence presented at trial proved that Brown fraudulently obtained credit cards from unsuspecting victims, many of whom were elderly or financially na?ve, who believed they were investing in vacuum cleaner inventory for a profitable business.
Once he secured the victims’ cards through false promises of no-risk dividends based upon the sale of the vacuum inventory, he immediately obtained all the available credit balance from each card. Brown did this by running the cards through a United States Bank Merchant Point of Sale terminal and falsely disguised each transaction as a sale of merchandise when, in fact, he did not sell anything at all. Each of these pretext or “fake” sales caused United States Bank to automatically deposit the amount of the fraudulent sale entered in the credit card machine into defendant Brown’s business bank account. Inspect yours to make sure they're doing their job; replace any broken ones. Your basement sump pump may live a little longer as a result.
The gutters are more complicated, especially for people with multilevel homes and little comfort with extension ladders.
You can usually reach lower gutters with a stepladder, but no matter what type of ladder you use or how high your roof, it helps to have a few key items arrayed at the bottom.

There's a certain rhythm to browsing the stalls at the Vineyard Artisans Festivals in West Tisbury. The light echo of footsteps on the wide floorboards at the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Hall, the shuffle of pebbles outside the Grange Hall. Some people like to do a large lap and see what's available, returning for their favorites. Others prefer to examine each artist's work, item by item. Each year a group of veteran festival artisans chooses a few new artists for highly coveted open spots. Applicants have to meet a series of criteria: Everything has to be handmade, the artists must live here, and the art being presented must meet a high standard of aesthetic criteria.
"We want people to come here and say, ‘Wow, look at that,'" Andrea says. "We see the same customers year after year. They're so happy to be here. I think we've carved a nice niche in the Vineyard and we're really a big part of it.Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an oil paintings for sale , and not a metal,"

Her craft reflects her personality – it takes passion, patience, and spunk to create something so distinctive and timeless. A serving dish takes anywhere from twenty-four to thirty-six hours to be fired in a kiln. She starts with a bar of glass (the thicker it is, the more conservative you have to be in cooling it down, she says) and uses a tile saw to create the shapes she wants. The fusion technique melts the fragmented pieces into a glass base, creating the design from within.
"I like doing tableware because I like function," she says of her glass serving dishes and cutlery, as well as her larger furniture pieces. "And color makes you smile; it just makes you happy. It really brightens everyone's lives.
"I have art I bought when I was eighteen years old and I still have it and it still gives me pleasure," the glassmaker says. "That's what I want for my pieces...to continually give someone pleasure."
