My first experience with freelancing came during my art school days. I had just finished my second year of Industrial Design when a friend recommended me to a group of three engineers who were developing a consumer product. In the end they paid me a little extra but nowhere near the amount for what I delivered. It was a hard lesson in learning that a fundamental part of freelancing is setting boundaries.

I continued to pickup freelance jobs through school, learning a little more with each project about managing time and client expectations. I had some good clients and a few horror stories. After graduating, I began full-time work at a design firm that required a lot of long work days and weekends on the job. What became increasingly stressful was the juggling between commitments during the day and client needs for the after-hours work. The result is always a lot of anxiety paired with ‘why am I doing this’ self-reflection.

Recently, my editor turned me onto The Freelancer’s Bible. It is the first practical book written about the topic I’ve seen that tackles the obvious and unexpected issues anyone working for themselves will likely encounter. Of particular interest to me is a section called ‘Strategies For Working On-Site’ which I do quite a lot of. It is a situation, especially if done long term that has lots of fuzzy edges. I’m glad to see that the book doesn’t assume that every freelancer works out of their well appointed home office.

The book also includes the ‘12 Acts of Uber-Communication’. These are efficiently worded bullet points relating to effective client interaction. “We thought it was a good thing to take him over there (to Northeast) because of the school system but it ended up being a mistake,” Eddie Sr. said. “His grades went to falling. We transferred him back to Boyd Anderson and he’s been coming up ever since.”

Enter Boyd Anderson coach Wayne Blair, who spotted Eddie Jr., in the hall and knew a good athlete when he saw one. Blair’s evaluation was enhanced by the knowledge that one of the nation’s top recruits from 2010, Demar Dorsey, was Eddie’s older brother.

“He got here mid-year his junior year and had a very low grade-point average,”Blair said. “I saw him walking in the hallways and said, ‘Man, stop walking around wasting your talent.’ From that moment we teamed up and he kept working on his grade-point average.

Santa Susana situation has improved

After a leaking roof and inconsistent heating and cooling system became problematic late last year, teachers and staff are welcome to a newly-repaired Santa Susana Hall.

“Most people don’t realize it’s all interconnected,” Rosenthal said. “They don’t have a dedicated unit for each office. It’s one big system.”

Another recent change in the building is the sudden removal of the venerable system of ivy that had been growing up both of the interior courtyards’ four floors for years.

Santa Susana Hall is designed with two courtyards connected by a section of hallway containing offices and the building’s elevator. The boundaries of each courtyard are made up by the offices, lined by walkways with a railing at the interior edge. The vines grew up the inside of each of these courtyards in the corners and around the railings.

Without the greenery, the balconies are more exposed, and the railings are left uncovered.

“It looks like a prison now,” said mathematics professor Mark Schilling, whose office is on the fourth floor.

Debose said he felt the removal of the vines would allow more light to get through into the building.
