PET promises new option for handleware

The resin was developed for extrusion blow molding applications and can run on existing machines and molds. Anderson was looking for a recyclable, high clarity, high-gloss container to replace its current PVC or glycol-modified PET jars. With some adjustments and alterations to equipment and processes, Polyclear fit that criteria, Embs said.

In initial runs on a Bekum shuttle machine, containers had problems with poor melt strength, un-melts, runny sleeves, a lack of clarity and a weak finished product. The material, like other polyesters, must be dried before processing, and must reach and maintain a moisture level less than 20 parts per million. The resulting containers were actually less brittle following the alterations, Embs said.

The materials high melting point, 230° C, led to the addition of 1,000-watt heater bands to the barrel. But, the hotter, stickier PET parison stuck to the existing blade knifes during cutting. A hot knife was used to cut the material at commercial speeds.

Along with reaching the correct temperature, the material must be processed in the correct time frame. Using PETG-type low-shear screws or PVC barrier screws led to unmelts, barrier screws also resulted in low melt strength. Regular PVC screws created too much shear and runny sleeves. To combat the problem, the company used a hybrid-barrier screw, and modified the temperature profile to increase back pressure and effectively mix the melted polymer and un-melted crystals, Embs said.

Polyclear crystallizes similar to PET, but it’s a stronger polymer with a higher parison temperature. To speed up cooling and avoid crystallization, cooling channels were added to existing molds. The creation of longer cooling belts and blowers prevented the containers from sticking to the trimmer. The original pinchers couldn’t cut through the polymer, so they were replaced with stronger stainless steel ones.

The new containers were required to meet top-load requirements, but the original designs failed crush tests, Embs said. After some alterations, like fixing the weight distribution to eliminate weak spots, the container had zero failures, Embs said.Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, The product has also been available on store shelves for more than a year and has had no failures in use, he added.

The resulting container is recyclable and carries a PETE 1 designation. It can also be made using up to 60 percent internal regrind if the regrind is dried and crystallized, Embs said.

“The Anderson Peanut Butter jar is a great success,” he said.

Though the peanut butter jar doesn’t call for them, Polyclear PET containers can be made with handles, making them ideal for beverage packing,This page contains information about molds, Embs said.

Indorama plans to launch more commercial applications for the material this year, including one for orange juice, he said.

The company is currently conducting tests and trials with the material, he said.

Groth says consumers typically get 1 per cent of their spend back as rewards, so for smaller spenders in the long run it's not worth it.

"If you are only spending $10,000 or $12,000 a year, you're looking at what we call a net-reward return which cancels each other out," he says.

"Because you only get 1 per cent back and there's a card fee plus a rewards program fee, you are probably getting just enough in points to cover those two fees."

Myth: Repaying each month's spending wipes out your interest bill

Buyers beware interest-free purchases sound attractive but this is often only the case for a certain period, usually from about 44 to 55 days.

Once this time is up, you will get caught out if you don't pay off your credit card bill in full, Groth says.

"If you spend $500, pay off $200 and carry over $300, you don't get any interest-free days until you pay the balance off again in full," he says.

"You are paying interest on the $300, and not only from the end of the last statement.

"You are actually paying interest from the purchase date of that $300.

"Any balance carried over will accrue interest."

So make sure you pay off the bill amount in full by the due date, or will you be hit hard by interest.

Myth: Credit card rates follow mortgage rates

Credit card rates interest rates remain high, and it is not uncommon for them to surge beyond 20 per cent.
While mortgage rates have fallen in recent months, the two usually fail to follow each other.

HSBC Australia's head of credit cards and retail alliances David Walker says the economic climate will determine credit card rates.

Smith says there are pros and cons for both.

"I'm emotional," Norton said as she helped son Dominic hang some clothes. "But I'm very excited for him. We're happy he had the opportunity to do this."

The English education major and Oakland resident said he was looking forward to his new freedom.

Just down the hallway, Brittany Glasgow and her family put together her new living space.

"It's been good," the biology major said of move-in day. "It hasn't been as stressful as I thought."

Glasgow said she was looking forward to the good times ahead with her roommate and her education. The Linden resident will miss her family, but, "They're going to visit."

Glasgow's father CJ said he is happy his daughter is going away to gain some freedom and to take part in higher education.

"We'll help her through college and hopefully she'll be okay by herself (after graduation)," he said.

Arielle Schaffel sorted through a room-full of blue and floral bedding and matching accessories while her father, Aarron, helped, teasing her about the excess of belongings.

"I have four laundry bags," she said.

The Fair Lawn resident and Biological Studies and education major said move in day was getting less stressful as she unpacked.

"Everyone's really nice and welcoming," she said. "I'm really excited."

Aarron said he was happy to be close enough by to help his daughter if she needed it but far enough to give her freedom.

"She chose Rowan, and we're really excited," he said. "The goal is to be a teacher."

Student volunteers Stephanie Jacobs and Kate Devane were there Saturday to help freshman and their parents.

The two said they suggested freshmen get to know their roommates and students who live on their floor.
