Girl Scouting is about adventure and merit badges, camping and calamities. For many of our readers, it’s also about friendships and family — friendships that often last a lifetime, and a history that spans generations.

As Girl Scouting marks its 100th anniversary in America, we asked our local Scouts past and present, to share their memories. Here are some of their stories:

Charlotte Stevenson Carrier, 78, and Cleona Dunlap Parisi, 77, became friends in first grade and joined the Girl Scouts at age 10. Both retired teachers, they remain friends today.The EZ Breathe home Ventilation system is maintenance free,

“We were the Girl Scouts of Troop 36 from about 1944 to 1948, and our members were students at Hollywood Junior High School, which is no longer standing,” wrote Carrier, remembering that weekly dues were a nickel.

As Scouts during World War II, “man and woman power was in short supply so we helped in many community activities,” Carrier wrote. “We worked at ‘Buy War Bonds’ events, stuffed envelopes for the Community Chest and later sold poppies for Veteran’s Day.”

For many girls, their first time away from home, usually to a rustic camp, was with Girl Scouts. It was a time for new adventures and to forget about unimportant stuff, like showers.

“When I was 9, I was finally allowed to go to overnight Girl Scout camp for a week,” wrote Mary Lou Drake Bell of her first time at Camp Chinqua Penn in North Carolina where she decided bathing was overrated.Can't afford a third party merchant account right now?

“I swam every day in the muddy lake, which surely was equivalent to a bath, I reasoned. No nagging from the counselors, who were more interested in scaring us with ghost stories than making sure their young charges bathed. “The morning of this particular trip Kay was waked before sunrise by the sound of sniffing and snorting outside her tent. She looked out over the area and saw a herd of over 50 buffalo nosing around the tents. She watched in horror as they pawed around, generally investigating the interesting structures and fragrant girly smells that had suddenly arrived in their domain.

“Everyone knew buffalo are not to be taken lightly. Almost every year tourists are killed or mangled by the totally unpredictable creatures. Kay and her Scouts were well aware of that fact, because warnings are posted everywhere. However, the rangers had assured her that the buffalo wouldn’t be roaming near their campsite.

“Kay realized the huge animals seemed to be headed to the nearby stream. Between the stream and the buffalo was the mess kit line, strung between two trees with 20 metal mess kits hanging from it. Imagining the reaction of the buffalo to the sounds they would hear when they ran into that line, and envisioning the entire herd stampeding over tents and children, including the general’s daughter and her children, Scott, Terry, and Debby, Kay immediately sprung into action.

“She quietly went around to each tent and announced a ‘special hike.’ She told the children to keep their pajamas on, put their shoes on immediately and very silently but quickly meet her at the bottom of the ‘mountain,’ a large stone they could climb up easily. The girls thought it was a great adventure and followed her instructions, making it up the rocky crag to safety, where they sat for what seemed like hours, watching the buffalo water themselves and finally leave the campsite.

“Instead of panicking, Kay demonstrated the Girl Scout spirit and ability as she quickly, calmly and efficiently managed to turn what could have been a disaster into an interesting, educational, safe and fun experience for her troop.”

In 1994, the commanding general at Fort Sill presented Kay Hughes, now 72, with the Molly Pitcher Award for her dedicated service to the girls of Fort Sill, a rare honor, Patrick Hughes wrote.

I hurt my lower back at work on New Year's Eve preventing two patients from falling. On suggestion by my supervisor, I have made an appointment at the occupational therapy clinic at the local hospital for today, as the condition is not as better by now as it should be. I will not be going to work tonight which is good for my back but not for my mind.

My job is enjoyable, and my coworkers fun. I will be stuck at home not even able to do housework which involves lifting anything beyond standing in one place.

One can never push the “pause” button in life, so it just keeps on going, and these days faster than ever! I am remembering all the times I have said, “I wish I could just sit and read a book once in a while!”

I will be much more careful what I wish for in the future! Of course, I say that now.

Caretakers usually make very bad patients. We are supposed to take care of others, not the reverse! I detest asking anyone to do anything for me, and I only ask if it's something I am not able to do myself. All I can see around me as I let my gaze take in the living room and part of the kitchen from here at the computer, are the things I left undone last week, which I dearly wish I had made time to finish then! I am also worrying about how my absence at work tonight will affect my coworkers who are already stretched to the limit by the many needs of our many patients. I hope this works out to give someone a little overtime!

I have a physical therapy intake on Monday afternoon to plan the strategy of relaxing the ornery muscle. WHEN will the actual therapy begin? The muscle will be fine sooner than all the paperwork is done!

In the past, we all who are caretakers, have had a pulled muscle, a sore shoulder, painful feet, scratches and even bites! Ours is not an easy job, but it's a very rewarding one, just not for the faint of heart.

It's good that there are places to go to for help with such things as pulled muscles. The Nurse told me to fill a water bottle half way and freeze it and sit on it, and roll around on it which will help the muscle to release. Chiropractors do adjustments to make a muscle spasm release, and usually it is possible to use an ice cube to freeze each end of a cramped muscle to make it release, but the muscle giving me trouble is apparently a large one deep in the area which has many connections which make it hard to use an ice cube. The frozen water bottle appears to be working just fine as I sit on it whilst typing.

Since I work part time, I will have used up my few vacation hours after Monday. It's amazing good luck that this is my weekend off. I can only imagine the horror of this situation for my coworkers who have small children to support and health insurance to pay for. This event is making me wonder if I should get one of those Aflak ducks we see on TV who come and hand us cash when we are out of work through injury! As IPF opens, Japan showcases technology but faces uncertainty

As Japan’s largest plastics show kicked off Oct. 25, the country’s machinery industry faces an uncertain time, with its global production up but companies under pressure to move manufacturing to low-cost spots.

Japanese machinery makers at the International Plastic Fair in Tokyo said they were increasingly setting up or expanding production in China, India and Southeast Asia, in part to escape a strong yen and be more cost-competitive globally.

The show remains a place where the Japanese unveil their latest designs -- and their equipment is still some of the world’s top plastics technology -- but the IPF itself this year is 25 percent smaller, with 750 firms exhibiting compared with almost 1,000 at the last edition, in 2008.

“We have recovered from the Lehman shock [the 2008 financial crisis that began in the United States] but many other problems are emerging, like the exchange rate problem,” said Hozumi Yoda, chairman of the Tokyo-based Association of Japan Plastics Machinery, which sponsors IPF. “Maybe these problems are much harder for Japanese companies because we can’t see the exit.”

Still, total production of injection molding machines will likely rise this year, AJPM estimates.

Japan’s injection molding industry will make about 14,500 machines this year, with most of the growth coming from its production in China, which is likely to double from 1,200 machines last year to 2,400 this year, said Yoda, who is also president of Nagano-based injection press maker Nissei Plastic Industrial Co.Initially the banks didn't want our RUBBER SHEET . Exodus in flooded areas as waters near Bangkok

For Lamontagne, then an artist living in Seattle, it was the studio space she'd never had in the tiny apartments she'd been able to afford there.

And so, for both long and short stretches during the past 18 years, the garage-turned-studio has been where Lamontagne has created much of her art.

Saturday is kind of special. For the first time, she's going to let strangers into a work space that, she admits, is "kind of sacred" to her.

"There wouldn't have been room for anyone to move," says Lamontagne, who has cleaned it out ("For the first time," she says), painted the walls and added lighting for Saturday's show.

Of course, it's not the studio you'll come to see.

It's the art, and one of the neat things about Lamontagne is that she doesn't get hunkered down in one subject, or even one medium, for too long, and tends to be at work on dozens of pieces at any given time.

Then again, no one piece appears to ever be "finished" - not, at least, until it sells.

"I didn't care for it, so I ‘chunkered' it all up and painted little scenes on them," Lamontagne says. "I usually let some color from the original painting come through. Not surprisingly, the larger dimensions contribute to ThinkPad's heavier weight, 1.64 pounds to Galaxy Tab's 1.24 pounds. The weight difference is especially obvious when holding the tablet in one hand, and you try to use it for anything longer than a minute or two at a time.

Other familiar specs include Wi-Fi and 3G (all models have a SIM card slot, but 3G certification will be complete later this fall), a slew of sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, assisted GPS, ambient light sensor), and dual cameras. The front-facing camera, positioned in the upper right corner when in portrait mode and the upper left corner when in landscape mode, is a reasonable 2 megapixels (better than what's on many other tablets); the rear-facing camera has 5 megapixels, but no flash.

The needle-free injectors use an accelerant to shoot a stream of vaccine under high pressure through the skin and into the muscle in less than a second.

PharmaJet's proprietary system replaced the gas propellant with a spring system that achieves the same objective, without the need to dispose of the gas cylinders, Todd said.

"The spring-powered system is more gentle. It takes less effort to get through the skin."

The needle-free injectors aren't more expensive than traditional needle and syringe inoculations. Middlesex County is charging $15 per flu shot at its clinics, whether the vaccine is delivered needle free or via regular needle and syringe, said Acting County Health Dept. Director Katherine Antonitis.
