Louisiana Tech Eco-marathon Entry Enters Crunch Time

Our journey to Houston 2012 is well underway! This year our team is bringing three cars: a new gasoline prototype vehicle named ThunderDawg, a new diesel urban concept vehicle called HotRod, and the current American record holder urban concept vehicle – Roadster. We have a great team of over twenty people and over half of these people are new members! It is truly great to see our team continue to grow.

Since two of our cars are new,Welcome to the online guide for do-it-yourself Ceramic tile. we have designed and fabricated them from the ground up. Through the summer and the early part of the school year, our team worked on designing the two new vehicles: HotRod and ThunderDawg.

For HotRod, we took the design for Roadster and altered it in such ways to increase fuel efficiency. We narrowed the front end of the vehicle and removed some weight from the body. By decreasing the frontal area and the weight of the vehicle, we hope to achieve great gas mileage.

As for ThunderDawg, one of our team members spent months designing the body of this vehicle. The body, consisting of its curves and shapes, is truly a work of art.Wireless Indoor Positioning System have become very popular in the system.

Today is the two and a half week mark until we leave for the Shell Eco-marathon Competition. We have officially entered, as we call it, “Crunch Time.” Our team has been working around the clock to have our cars completed for March 29th, the day we depart for Shell Eco-marathon Americas.

After returning from the competition last year, we have a made a few improvements to Roadster, such as replacing the rear lights. Besides needing to attach a newly designed and fabricated windshield wiper, Roadster is ready to take the journey to Houston for the SEMA Competition.

So far, we have made great progress on our two new cars. In early December, we used our three axis foam router to cut out the body of HotRod. By mid January, we have completed applying the carbon fiber to our body. Also in mid January, we cut out the body for ThunderDawg. By the end of January, the body of ThunderDawg had been completely covered in carbon fiber.

Since then, the engine chassis for both HotRod and Thunderdawg have been designed and welded together. Both HotRod and ThunderDawg have been making great progress. We have been completing the layout of all engine components, the steering system, the brakes, and many more aspects. Our team is making great progress on both cars and hope to have them each to paint in the next week. Our team is very much looking forward to the upcoming competition and will definitely remain in our hardworking “Crunch Time” mode to have our vehicles ready to compete!

We have officially reached our two week mark! Reaching this two week mark entails an exciting yet nervous feeling for all of our team members. We are so excited for the competition to be getting closer, but at the same time we are concerned with how much work must be completed in order for our cars to be up to the Louisiana Tech University standard that we pride ourselves in. For the past two days, we have continued to make progress on our vehicles. As for ThunderDawg, our team has been working very hard on the steering. This year, we are going with a rear steered vehicle. This is a new adventure for us since all of our previous cars have been front wheel steered vehicles. We hope to have the steering operating by this weekend.

For these two days, many things for HotRod have been in the works. We have officially installed the ignition in HotRod. This is a great step in the right direction to having the car ready for competition. Also, one of our members has been working on finishing the wheel pods, which include being able to attach and unattach them from the car and making sure the tires do not come in contact with them when making a turn. Lastly, we have been working on recessing the rear lights into the body of the vehicle. We are working for a smooth finish in the transition from the body to the cover of the lights and back to the body.

Restoring a French farmhouse

Twelve years ago the interior designer Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay came across the house of her dreams in the south of France. Friends joked that she and her husband, Hugh, a venture capitalist, and their young daughters would leave London, never to be seen again. In reality the house had been sorely neglected and it would end up taking many years before its restoration was complete.

'It had been very unloved,’ Fitzwilliam-Lay says. There was glaringly white crazy paving in the car-park, and wild boar regularly dug up the garden. Fitzwilliam-Lay has used an unorthodox approach to the interiors. One of the oldest and most respected polymer engineering research and educational programs in the United States is contributing its expertise to a new plastics university in India.

Representatives of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Polymer Engineering Center signed a memorandum of understanding in Dehli, India, this month with the PlastIndia Foundation and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

Portals 2, A Gem Among Duds?

Portals, the first person umm shooter game? No, that’s not right. The first person puzzle game? Not entirely true… There’s no exact way to classify the game. The one so far that sounds the best is what IGN classifies it as, a “First-person physics-based puzzle [game].” Either way it’s a great game, and rarely do you find a sequel to match something so awesome. So does Portals 2 meet up to its “brother's” name? Is it a gem among duds for sequels? Let’s break down the game to make it much clearer.

For those of you who don’t know what Portals is, let me fill you in on WHAT YOUR MISSING from the original first part.

The first installment of Portals started out with the main character Chell waking up in the Aperture Science Testing room accompanied by the voice of a cynically comical super computer named GLaDOS. GLaDOS’ role is to make Chell test, test, and test in promise of a cake. After a couple of brain straining, but entertaining tests, GLaDOS becomes even crazier, and tries to kill Chell by luring her into the incinerator room. Chell finds her way out, escapes the testing area and proceeds to kill GLaDOS. Chell does this by removing personality cores that keeps GLaDOS functioning properly. After removing all of them she malfunctions and causes a portal to appear that fills the entire room, dragging GLaDOS and Chell to the surface. A bright light covers the entire screen as it transitions to Chell on the floor, GLaDOS is visible, across from Chell, ripped apart. Chell on the other hand is unconscious and gets dragged away by a robot, back to the Aperture Science building. Before the credits begin to roll, another video shows a room in the building filled with other personality cores, a companion cube (a cube with hearts on it), the cake GLaDOS promised Chell, and a letter from GLaDOS saying that she’s still alive and she’s not angry. So the storyline of Portals was simple, nothing big. The games comical moments kept the player into the game and the length was enjoyable. But it’s ok because that means more levels that will definitely test your mind.

The game offers far more hours of game play and the storyline is beyond greater. Valve, you really outdid yourself with this game. There are different parts in the game that are just going to make you go “gasp!’ or “Oh my GOSH!” It just blows my mind that they turned around and gave such a short game new life. By the end of the game, you’re going to find a way to love Wheatley and hate him at the same time. Wheatley is a personality core that came off GLaDOS, much like the other ones. But what makes him different from the rest is that the creators of GLaDOS believe she was going to become too smart, and would’ve outsmarted them. Although he is just a recording he has a major impact on the storyline.

Rather than asking “does Portals 2 rank up to Portals?” I should be asking “How higher does it rank up!” Portals 2 is really a great game the storylines replay value is very high. In fact, I have just finished my second play through to see how fast I could beat it. And if you do get tired of the game, it includes a completely different campaign for co-op to add more hours of fun!

Suze's card is better than the Rush card, but that's because the Rush card is so expensive that it serves only as proof of the ironic and sad reality that it's expensive to be poor.

When you compare Suze's Approved card to a decent option like GreenDot, it's not exactly a sweet deal.

In addition to the card purchase and monthly maintenance fee, there are 18 (count'em) additional fees that could be levied against cardholders, including a $2 fee for calling a customer service rep more than one time in a month. At GreenDot, the fee structure is much simpler. There are eight potential fees, including the purchase and monthly maintenance. That's a a full dozen fees less to worry about than with the Approved card.

Suze said in a press conference that if consumers use her card "exactly how I tell you," it will be the cheapest option. Of course, GreenDot could say the same thing and they would have far less nagging to do.

"It's far more complex than the other top-tier cards," says Odysseas Papadimitriou, chief executive of CardHub, which analyzed the pre-paid card because of Suze's pre-launch claims that it would help your credit score. Most of the 20 different potential fees can be waived if you deposit a set amount on the Approved card. But, one misstep and you get nicked.

Moreover, the claim that the Approved card might help your credit score is also untrue.

In the press conference launching the card, Orman acknowledged that the even though she will be sharing consumer's purchase data with one of the major credit bureaus -- TransUnion -- TransUnion will not be using the data to help Approved card customers build a credit file. They may someday. But they're not now and there is not even a promise to do so in the future.

Reggie McKenzie made clear on his first day as Raiders general manager that there's a new regime in Oakland.

Soon after officially signing his contract to be the first general manager since longtime owner Al Davis' death, McKenzie fired coach Hue Jackson in a bold first move as he looks to give the organization a fresh start.

"There comes a time when change is necessary," McKenzie said Tuesday. "For the Raiders the time is now. The Raiders organization, with respect and deference for all its tradition and history, is about to embark on a new era."

The era will begin without Jackson, who was fired after going 8-8 in his first season as head coach. McKenzie wanted to bring in his "own guy" to rebuild the organization.

Finding that coach will be the first major task for McKenzie, who also must bulk up the personnel department and evaluate the roster in what promises to be a busy offseason.

Owner Mark Davis said McKenzie will decide on the new coach and the personnel decisions, with the coach ultimately reporting to the general manager.

"Guys, this is where I came from. I'm back home now. I'm back home," he said. "As soon as Mark told me `We want you for the job' I couldn't, you know, I couldn't stop smiling."

Jackson joined the Raiders as offensive coordinator in 2010 under head coach Tom Cable and engineered a dramatic improvement as Oakland more than doubled its point total and improved to 8-8. That helped him get the job when Davis decided not to retain Cable.

Toshiyuki Nakagaki, a professor at Future University Hakodate says the organism, which he cultivates in petri dishes, "organises" its cells to create the most direct root through a maze to a source of food.

He says the cells appear to have a kind of information-processing ability that allows them to "optimise" the route along which the mold grows to reach food while avoiding stresses - like light - that may damage them.

"Computers are not so good at analysing the best routes that connect many base points because the volume of calculations becomes too large for them," Tero explained.

"I'm convinced that studying the information-processing capabilities of lower organisms may lead to an understanding of the human brain system," Aono said. "That's my motivation and ambition as a researcher."

Aono says that among applications of so-called "slime mold neuro-computing" is the creation of new algorithm or software for computers modelled after the methods slime molds use when they form networks.

A team of doctors from JJ Hospital visited him and drew his blood for tests. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan spoke to him and appealed to him to end his fast. The chief minister said Hazare had told him that he would do as his doctors advise him to.

Officials in Mumbai and Delhi said the government was watching the situation closely. Given earlier experiences with the agitation in Delhi, the government, they said, was wary of appearing to force its will on Hazare, or take any action in a hurry.

Earlier in the evening, Arvind Kejriwal, Hazare’s close aide and member of Team Anna’s core committee, said he had made a fresh appeal to the activist to call off his fast but the 74-year-old was unrelenting.

Kejriwal and fellow activist Kiran Bedi had implored Hazare to end his fast in the morning as well, but Hazare had insisted that the crowds gathered in his support gave him the energy to carry on.

In fact, there wasn’t much of a crowd to speak of.

For an agitation that has always based its claims of legitimacy in numbers, be it at public meetings or on the web, the financial capital provided a significant reality check. The forecast is for similar lows in the coming days.

Following the uncertainties surrounding Hazare’s health over the past few days, a fully equipped team of health specialists was present at the MMRDA grounds. In the morning, Pote had said that although Hazare’s health had improved over the past two days, it continued to be fragile.

“Anna’s blood pressure, pulse and weight is normal as of now. His last meal was yesterday’s lunch. We have advised him to drink plenty of water. Although his fever has subsided, the fluctuating weather condition has caused him a sore throat but overall, his condition is fine,” Pote had said in the morning.

Born in Aspen in 1893 (in a small, two-story Victorian near the top of South Mill Street), she kept a meticulous record of life in Aspen during the above years. She worked as a columnist for The Aspen Times, was the court clerk for 9th Judicial District Judge John T. Literally, it would have been impossible to look almost anywhere in town without getting a peep of the Smuggler. Clearly evident in a couple of the photos are two large greenhouses, located directly below the hubbub of the mine. They were huge, and were it not for the fact that Aspen has always been known for its praiseworthy gardens, one might think they were needed to keep summer alive during the cold seasons.

There were large Fourth of July parades in 1917 and 1918, flags as big as small houses draped around horse-drawn carriages, disguised as floats. Aspen might have been on the skids, but one would never know it. And just like today, it was almost impossible to get a picture without a dog somewhere in the background.

"Is it different? Do you like it?" Lyhnthy stopped moving for a second, cocking her head to one side. "I like it. Nerds are polite. They're usually too scared to touch me at all, so I don't have to worry about that."

Plastic card charges are a menace that must be controlled

Rip-off fees on plastic cards have been outlawed by the Office of Fair Trading this week, but that doesn't mean we'll see the end of them any time soon. While the OFT has given companies notice to change misleading debit and credit card surcharging practices, you can be sure that they'll drag their feet long enough to ensure a decent flow of extra profits before they have to comply.

The OFT is also pushing for new laws to stop consumers being surcharged when buying goods and services with any debit card.is the 'dstti revolution' upon us? But bitter experience teaches us that new legislation can take an eternity to reach the statute books, and that's even presuming that the OFT's proposals gain support in Parliament.
