Several Minnesota state parks are replacing old gas guzzlers with
electric cars, installing solar panels that help generate electricity
for many of its park buildings and visitor centers and rehabbing those
buildings to use less energy. The efforts are helping the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cut its overall energy use and
reduce its carbon footprint.
“We’re really trying to take a
comprehensive approach to energy reduction overall,” said Peter Hark,
operations director for the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division.
In
2012 -- through parks projects and new energy saving practices
throughout the agency -- the DNR will have cut its energy use by 6
percent in two years for a savings of $800,000. That puts the agency on
track to meet a target Gov. Mark Dayton set for state government to
reduce its energy use 20 percent by the end of 2015.
Last year
six solar systems were installed. This year, at least seven more
installations are planned. In the last several years the DNR has doubled
its renewable energy-generating capacity and ended 2012 with 22
photovoltaic (solar) and wind installations throughout the state, mainly
at its parks buildings.
“DNR state parks are a major producer of renewable energy in the state,” Hark said.

for you! in southwestern Minnesota, uses wind power to generate
electricity. A wind turbine's output fulfills most of the office's
electrical needs. At Itasca State Park, near Bemidji, a roof-mounted
solar system was installed on a visitor center in December.

Wild River State Park, an hour’s drive north of the Twin Cities, thermal
panels are used to heat water at its campground showers. A solar system
was installed to generate electricity.
On a sunny day the
ground mounted panels just north of the park office generate more than
enough electricity for the office. Any electricity generated in excess
of the building’s needs flows back into the electric grid and is
credited to the park to reduce electric charges on cloudy days and at
night.
Over the course of a year the solar panels are projected
to provide for all of the park office’s electrical needs. Since
solar-generated electricity is a renewable source of energy, the park
will be able to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions -- a contributing
factor to global warming.
While solar installations may be the
most visible way for the public to see energy savings at work, they’re
only a small piece of what’s going on. At Wild River State Park, for
instance, programmable thermostats were installed, old light fixtures
were swapped out with more energy efficient bulbs, occupancy activated
sensors for lights and building ventilation systems were installed and
older, poor mileage vehicles were replaced with newer electric gas
hybrids, said Paul Kurvers, park manager. During the 12-month-period
from October 2011 through September 2012, the park reduced its energy
use by 24 percent compared to the prior year,Totech Americas delivers a

Bigger
picture, “By using renewable sources of energy such as solar, and by
reducing the amount of energy we use that is produced from the burning
of fossil fuels, we’re able to reduce carbon emissions that pollute the

Wild
River is one example but throughout Minnesota, the parks and trails
system is generating enough electricity to prevent 225 metric tons of
carbon dioxide emissions each year, enough to take 39 cars off the road.
“At the end of 2015, we’d like to have 8 percent of the energy
we use in our buildings come from renewable sources generated on site,”
said Rob Bergh, the DNR’s energy coordinator. “Now, we’re at a little
over 1 percent.”
The renewable energy installation costs at
parks buildings and other DNR buildings, are paid by a combination of
bonding money, Legacy Amendment funds and renewable energy development
grants from Xcel Energy, the Minneapolis-based utility.We are one of the

The fire, caused by an overheated uninterruptible power source for a computer network, was put out quickly and no one was hurt.

problems as he tries to keep a campaign promise to fix what he called a
"broken government." His new administration also says it's aiming to
overhaul information technology that it says is duplicative, disjointed
and unable to communicate well across agencies or with local
governments. Agency IT spending reached $1.2 billion in 2011, according
to legislative researchers.

A look behind the history of a lavish Tyler house bulldozed in the 1960s
A few decades ago, there was a magnificent, 14-room, three-story home in Tyler that apparently held a terrible secret.
Had it survived the expansion of Gentry Parkway, the home would be adjacent to the stately Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum, a lingering symbol of Tyler's early prosperity.
Banker Horace Henry Rowland's lavishly furnished home was built in 1884 and bulldozed in the 1960s,This patent infringement case relates to retractable RUBBER MATS , along with entire blocks filled with old homes to make room for the road.
Longtime Tyler residents remember the stately character of the house, but it was the events associated with it that left lasting impressions, causing even the most seasoned historians to cringe in disbelief.
For decades, people have wondered why the home's last occupant abruptly moved out, leaving it filled with a treasure trove of antiques and fine furnishings.
Years have erased physical traces of the structure, but dusty files held by the Smith County Historical Society and Tyler Public Library hold an abundance of details about the H.H. Rowland house and the people who once called it home.
It was only recently that local historians pieced two and two together, finally unearthing answers to questions about the house that generated decades of whispers.
"It was a very ornate house, a very fine house," historian Mary Jane McNamara said. "Mr. Rowland had a big fine car, a Pierce Arrow; really upscale, bigger than a Cadillac and it was open."
Rowland was not only a prominent Tyler banker but also a prosperous merchant and property owner who enjoyed making money.
He and wife, Mattie Ophelia Wood, had four children together.

The 1896 slaying of Parry Rowland kicked off a tri-state manhunt that ended with the apprehension and conviction of the culprit, records show.

Rowland's wife died in 1918, after 45 years of marriage.
He continued living in the house, along with daughter, Nell, and her husband, Thomas L. Johnson.

Will kiosks meet needs of Iowa's jobless?
Jobless Iowans, business leaders, union organizers and elected officials from both parties will share some of the same anxieties this week as the state closes the first wave of 36 unemployment field offices and replaces them with access to services via hundreds of computer kiosks.
Wednesday is the last day of operation for 31 of the offices, as the state embarks on a major change in how it provides services to unemployed Iowans.
Iowa Workforce Development officials and Gov. Terry Branstad insist the move will not only save the state millions of dollars each year but also better assist the nearly 101,the Bedding pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs.000 Iowans who are now unemployed.

In February, Teresa Wahlert, director of Iowa Workforce Development, proposed closing dozens of unemployment field offices and replacing them with hundreds of computer workstations in places such as public libraries, colleges, homeless shelters and Army National Guard field maintenance shops.

The report is clearly aimed at addressing worries about the rapid rise of Chinese solar panel manufacturers, who now represent 58 percent of the world’s solar panel manufacturing capacity.

"It’s not necessarily anything to do with the U.S. being competitive," he said.
China is trying to build its own industry to produce solar manufacturing equipment, however, and has lured companies like Applied Materials of the United States to set up large research labs in Chinese cities like Xi'an.
The bilateral surplus in the sector with China was at least $247 million last year, despite $1.15 billion in solar panel imports, the report said.

Always clean your brushes in between colors to keep the colors isolated and pure too.
You dont want blue in your shadows, for example. Study my paintings if you wish because I do a lot of distinct shadows and I light things like vases, leaves, birds, fruit, etc. in ways that I think will stand out to you. Like if I paint a vase the bottom of the vase is darker than the top.Prior to RUBBER SHEET I leaned toward the former, Just like in real life. This applies to any shape whether it be a face or an apple or a vase. Also look at my backgrounds, as Ive done a lot of them. Notice how each background is a multitude of layers to give it a finished and complicated look. Glazes allow me to reach this end. When I started out I didnt know what I was doing and friends and family thought I was crazy. And the very same people act like they knew Id make it now that I have.Detailed information on the causes of Ceramic tile, Oh well, its the way of the world. But stick with it and youll be enlightened and inspired over time!
